After leaving my sisters place (and saying goodbye to my cat nephews) I head to the Georgetown area of D.C. My hotel is in the area, and so is my conference (which starts tomorrow). There was also a coffee/pastry place I found recommended online (Yelp maybe?) and thought I would check it out.
I got a latte and a cupcake at "Baked and Wired". The cupcake was good, better than CakeLove - but I still love my Sensational Bites. I couldnt figure how to connect to the wireless there (yeah, I am practically a genius) so I headed down the street to Barnes & Noble, where I have been for most of the day. I am debating - do I get lunch here, or do I grab a brownine from Baked & Wired on my way to the hotel? Actually, just typing that question enabled me to answer it. Brownie it is!
Supposedly, the brownie is the Baked and Wired specialty, and since the cupcake was pretty good, I think I am ready to try the next pastry on my list ;)
I am also trying to figure out how to squeeze in a workout. I guess I have to talk to the hotel - supposedly they dont have a gym, but give you a pass to a local Bally's. I walked around though, and didnt see a Ballys. Hmmmm.
My friends/fellow students/fellow conference attendees land around 3, so I have a bit of time until we all meet up. We also have an informal get-together for the conference tonight at The Front Page. My sisters friend, Michael, said its kind of a place for suits/business people. That makes it probably appropriate for the conference attendees, but not really a place I want to hang all night. The good thing is, this place is in the DuPont area, and there are lots of fun bars here and there. The conference starts tomorrow morning pretty early - but I dont present until Thursday. That means I can have a bit of fun tonight...but my partner and I still arent done with our presentation - so it looks like there cant be TOO much fun on tonights agenda :)

My Send Off Party
Heading from my sisters to the conference hotel. Jean and her roomate were at work and one cat was hiding - so this was my send off party. Not very exciting, I know . . . But at least he appeared to be thinking about all of the good times we shared

Metro Time
The Metro is similar to Chicago's EL, but way nicer :) Anyway - being familiar with the transit at home makes this one easy to figure out. On my way to meet my sis at happy hour! Its a billion degrees here and about 100% humidity, so beer it is!
It Stops Raining . . .
Chick-fil-A
We dont have this place at home and I have heard people rave about it. Time to see what all the hoopla is about! (I did my run today so I deserve it . . . Right?)
While My Sister Away . . .
Jean is at work and I am getting ready to go and get some work done. In the meantime I have plenty of company!

My Sister Is a Bit Odd
But its ok - it runs in the family :)
While stalling for cupcake-time, Jean & I did a bit of walking around and shopping. After Starbucks we hit some stores, and then I decided to take advantage of some of the gizmos on my phone and take some portraits of my sister. She makes a nice mouse (or whatever that is).
We then went to pick up our cupcakes at CakeLove and head home:

My cupcake (chocolate with vanilla frosting) was ok - but I still think we have them beat at home with Sensational Bites!
We just hung around for the rest of the night. Jean has to go to her "real" job tomorrow and I have to work on my presentation for the conference...so not a whole lot of excitement on the plans for today. The weather also put a bit of a damper on any idea of doing something outdoorsy - and we were glad we decided not to head downtown to do anything ... rat poision weirdness closed many of the metro stations and we have a feeling that we might never have gotten back home!

Who Knew DC Has Starbucks?
Its a dreary, chill day. Had some tex-mex for lunch . . . And now some coffee. Next I am going to grab a cupcake at a "famous" place called CakeLove. Mmmm . . .

My Sister
Jean works at Giffords - a cute ice cream shop in DC. She lives to serve (pun intended). She also has a "real" job but its not blog-worthy.
Busy Employees
DC airport employees have it rough! Its hard to squeeze in you turn at the dunk tank between plane landings . . . I admit, I see a lot of strange things. People, on the whole, are strange (myself not excluded!). But I do have to admit, this is the first time I have seen a full-fledged dunk tank being actively used by a large group of airport grounds crew :)
Leaving For DC
I leave today for Washington DC..and will be gone until next Friday. I will try to post, but likely will be doing some mobileblogging. Updates may be short, but I will try!
My biggest concern is trying to get my workouts in while in DC, so stay tuned to see how that goes!

Hmmm
Ok so I am at a club and this guy just said to me "I am from Europe and I really like your look". Dont worry fans I already did my run today - no run tomorrow means party time! Just had to blog the comment before I forget.
Later, at the next club .. a guy came up to my friend Kelly and said "You're georgeous". And he didnt stop there. He explained to her that the was georgeous because she looked like the musician, Pink. Not just like her...she had a nose just liked Pink, and so she looked like her... minus the hair.
I am not sure I would spot Pink's nose out in a crowd..but here is a a picture of Pink ;)

Saturday Run ... On Friday
Due to the fact that I am leaving for DC, and have plans tonight, I am doing my 90 minute run today! Patti, another TNT runner who has Friday's off ... also came into some scheduling conflicts and agreed with me that "getting it out of the way" would be best.
Training Log
Time:  1:29:04 time  Distance:8.5 miles   Pace:  10:25-10:30 min/mi
Today is totally muggy - and since we both dont have work, we wanted to sleep in a bit (plus we both drank a few beers at the OAR concert last night, so a 7 am run wasnt gonna happen). We decided to meet at 10AM - nice to sleep in, but it may have caused some suffering in the weather. Throughout the run we were pacing really well - a bit faster than normal but still totally comfortable. Then at the end I started getting a cramp in my shoulder/neck area. This forced me to walk a bit here and there, slowing down our overall pace. Still, it was a really good run - and by getting it out of the way Patti and I could find the time and ability to celebrate a bit over the weekend...something that can be a bit tough when you have a 7 am run on Sat mornings ;)

We are here . . .
Waiting . . .
I am getting some complaints from my "fans" about my lack of recent posts - I am still alive and simply face an overactive social calendar! Currently that calender has hit a snag - courtesy of the CTA. But as soon as I board my favorite method of transportation, I will be heading to meet some friends at the OAR concert.

Exhausted
All week I have been working on this presentation - we present it next Thursday at a conference in D.C. I am leaving early to visit my sister (who lives in D.C.) so I will be there starting Saturday. Its now Wed night, and while we have finally figured out conceptually how we are going to put together this presentation - we still have yet to start it. That means time is short, and we are in a bit of trouble!
We have spent each day from 10-5 working on this, and its exhausting. I am tired and I think my vision is getting worse after staring at my computer screen so much! We have had a busy week, with something each night of the week - and I feel like I havent had a second to spare. If I didnt go run with the girls on Monday, I would be without a workout thus far this week. I am currently trying to figure out how to squeeze a workout in tomorrow - with another meeting during the day and a concert tomorrow night. I have to admit, I am getting concerned - both with the lack of ability I have had to squeeze in a workout ... and with the fact that we have a presentation in a few days, and so far not a single thing to present!

"Why Am I Gaining Weight While Training?" She Cries...As She Takes Another Lick of Her Ice Cream Cone
After two lattes and a long (and slightly unproductive meeting) I realized it was going to be difficult to motivate myself to complete today's 40 minute run. I decided to try to recruit some fellow runners to see if they also felt the same. A short email suggesting a group run this evening was met by three quick replies ... everyone was in!
So we met, and ran for our suggested time along the lake. We all discussed that, despite the humidity, we were glad we did it - because each of us admitted if we hadnt done it together ... today was going to get skipped :) On the way home I decided to reward myself for a job well done, and called Jeff to come pick me up and take me for ice cream. I had a craving for Superman ice cream - I only know of one local place to get it...and its SO GOOD. Lots of people dont know what it is ... its red, yellow and blue - and totally delicious. Looks like this:
Training Log
Time:  39:25 time  Distance:3.7 miles   Pace:  10:40min/mi
I cant accurately figure out our pace and distance...so there was some guessing involved :) We did about 3.7 miles and paced at about 10:40. We started off pretty slow, I am not sure if it was the humidity, or just the fact that we have never done a short run together ... etc. We did eventually pick up the pace, but I think ended up just pacing normal (at 10:30) with the "sped up" pace, thus I guessed us at 10:40.

Sundays Are Never Long Enough
I have come to really appreaciate my "days of rest" - Sundays and Thursdays are my two favorite days of the week ;) Sundays in particular, because I usually just lay around and eat whatever I can find in the house. Today I was pretty good about eating, but that is only because I felt to guilty about yesterday and Friday!
After the Cubs game I met some friends in from Arizona. We met for a few drinks after the game, and then went out to dinner at Smith & Wollensky and then out for some more drinks. There were quite a few beverages involved, in addition to some more pastries and a huge steak. Needless to say, I was a bit tired this morning and thankful there wasn't a run on the schedule.
I spent the day watching tv and doing some homework (while Jeff was golfing) and then met my sister (in town from DC) for dinner. I just got home a few minutes ago and am ready for bed. I have an early meeting tomorrow with my research partner and we need to get all of our stuff together for our conference next week. We havent started with our presentation or data analysis yet, so I think we have quite the day ahead of us!

When Innocent Cars Suffer
When we arrived for our Sat run, this car was sitting in the middle of the parking lot. It was very clearly "on display" and I got a sneaking suspicion someone was trying to send a message. This doesnt look like your ordinary vandalism. I suspect this was payback :)

(Its hard to tell in the picture, but every single window is busted-out, the headlights are busted, the car has dents all over it, and the wheels are pulled off)

A Ten Miler - Done Right :)
Training Log
Time:  1:45:43 time  Distance:10 miles   Pace:  10:34min/mi
I had a good run ... I have to leave in a minute for the Cubs game, so not much time to post. Things went well and the weather was ideal ... the past two 10-milers were really HOT, so today was quite nice! It was 70 max, and the sun wasnt too killer. After the run, of course my knees hurt - but my ankle also hurts too. (I am icing while I am typing). Talked with the girls and we decided I might need new shoes - so I will add that to my list for this week. Bring in the old shoes, make sure they are the "right" kind - and then make sure mine are in decent condition and do not need to be replaced. If they need to be replaced, then its time to do some more shopping ;)

Today I Ate A Bug (...And About 30 Pastries)
Today I didnt do an actual "workout" but walked all over the city, I guarantee I walked a couple of miles. Sure, I stopped here and there to shop and eat - but its the total mileage that counts, right?
Did some shopping along Michigan Avenue, and went to "Afternoon Tea" at the Peninsula. It was a pretty fancy place, I must say. Since I have never done Afternoon Tea, I made sure I tried each one of the pastries. There were about 30 of them. But, they were tiny bite-sized pastries...so I dont think it counts.
After Tea, while walking around, a bug flew right into the back of my throat and was gone before I even noticed it. I have never in my life had this happen, though I do know it to be quite common. It was gross, and I still cant stop thinking about it.

More Rest (If You Consider a 6.5 Hour Meeting Resting!)
Today I had a meeting at 12:00 on campus. I had work to do to prep for the meeting this morning ... and pretty much had to run out of the door to get there in time. Because we had so much stuff to do (partly because I had screwed up some stuff) my meeting lasted 6 1/2 hours. I went to the restroom twice, and we grabbed a coffee (which took about 5 minutes - so we worked for about 6 hours and 10 minutes. I dont even work a "real job" and havent been in an office for that long in over 2 years. Talk about going stir-crazy :(
Now I have a ton of other work to do, that was determined in that meeting. The fun never ends!
In addition, I havent done my workouts in the last two days ... and I have eaten a lot of bad food to boot. Tomorrow I am going to have to do some sort of workout, but then I worry about doing the back-to-back runs on Thursday. I do plan to do my stretches and strength training moves tonight before I go to sleep, so at least I will do something constructive today.

My Prayers Answered!
Every week I hope for rain so that our mid-week workout is cancelled, and today that dream came true! We went to the workout, but a storm was brewing. Luckily we ran a bit late and when we got there, everyone else was doing their warm-up run ... and during that run it started to pour. Our workouts are not cancelled with rain, but they are with lightening storms - and thats what we got! So what did we decide to do instead of workout? Get Mexican food, of course!
Electrocuted in the Shower?
When I got home from eating Mexican food in my running clothes, I realized I needed to take a shower. Not because of my workout, but because I hadn't taken one yet today! I had to get up really early today to do some campus stuff, and decided to wait until after my workout to shower. When I got home, I told Jeff I was going to take a shower...and a big lightning bolt hit. So I wondered aloud - "Can I get hit by lightning in the shower?". Jeff didnt know either, and since I was sitting at the computer he told me to look it up :)
It looks like you can! The odds are not high, but during a lightning storm, it appears to be unwise to take a shower:

Another Pet Peeve - Random Touching
The other day I mentioned how I am not a big fan of strangers talking to me - this morning that got topped - I got a random to talk to me and TOUCH ME. That is obviously much worse, and if I had to limit my pet peeve list - the touching would win.
So I am walking around campus with a huge pile of books - and these books are big. About 2 feet long, and about 2 inches thick...
As I am carrying these books from the library to my office, a strange guy stops me. "Wow, How old are those?". This wasnt that weird - the books contain a magazine/periodical from 1900 ... so I can see someone having an interest. He asks me about the books, whats in them, etc. Again, not so weird. (I would have preferred he not talk to me at all, but his interest was "intellectual" at this point, so I wasnt horribly bothered). Then, this guy touches my bicep and asks me if I got it from carrying the books around, or from Pilates. He then proceeds to tell me about a new Pilates studio close by that "has girls like me"...which he defines as "huge". I then try to run away as fast as possible, with a 50lb arm full of books.
I am pretty sure that this whole interaction was abnormal, and that I am allowed to add "strangers touching me" to my pet peeve list :)

This is Why I Hate Going to Campus
Not only does it take me 45 minutes to get here - but my building is (un)officially the ugliest in the city of Chicago!

The Injury Report
Starting a couple of weeks into training, I fell naturally into a pace group of 7 ladies: myself, Patti, Becca, Jodi, Kristin, Allyson & Ruth. Over the miles, many of us have taken turns at injuries and other obstacles that sidetrack our training. It's obviously not just my pace group suffering - I would say 30% of the people I am familiar with are either in physical therapy, out temporarily due to injury, or out permanantly due to injury! Its becoming more and more obvious why many believe training for a marathon to be one of the "stupidest" things an individual can aspire to do. We just lost another one this week, and I thought it was about time for an injury recap:)
Training Log
Time:  20:00 time  Distance:1.88 miles   Pace:  10:30min/mi
I decided since it is so humid and muggy today to do my 20 minute run (the one that I should have done yesterday, but swapped my cross-training day) on the treadmill. I always give our gym too much credit I think ... I assumed that it would be properly air-conditioned due to the fact it is so muggy. When I got to the gym, the door was closed - this is a good sign. Our small gym often tries to go without A/C and instead open the doors and turn on the ceiling fans ... while I understand trying to conserve energy and save money, I think sweating your clients out may not be the best way of doing this. So anyway, the door was closed and I was happy. But the gym was not "cool" by any means. All the ceiling fans were on (there are like 10) and so was this big floor fan. I think the air was on, but it was probably set to 90 degrees or something :( About 5 minutes into my run I think I had already sweat off 10 lbs, by the end of it you would have thought I just came out of the shower. Oh well, I put in my 20 minutes - and did some strength training. And then when I walked out of the gym, it seemed as if the humidity had broken and it was actually quite comfortable outside. I guess I learned my lesson!
| Member | Status | Detail |
| Kristin | Out for the Season | Kristin was the first member we lost, and not due to training. After suffering some injuries in a car accident, recovery time took quite a toll on her mentally and physically and training was no longer feasable/desirable |
| Jodi | Out for the Season | Complaining of foot pain and what she referred to as a "club foot", Jodi sought professional consultation. Suprised with the diagnosis of a stress fracture, she regretfully pulled herself out - yet promises to become a member of our growing "Cheer Squad". |
| Ruth | DL | Ruth has a unique situation, recently bitten by a "love bug" she finds it hard to make our 7AM Sat runs. She swears she continues to train on her own, and that she is not lost forever. We anxiously anticipate her return. |
| Allyson | DTD | Allyson suffers from the common ailment - Runners Knee. She has been training through the pain and working to overcome her ailments. |
| Dawn | DTD | Dawn also has been blessed with a case of Runners Knees. Not yet up to "injury status", she continues to train and hope luck goes her way. |
| Becca | Recovering | Recently completing 8 weeks of physical therapy to correct shin splints, Becca has been feeling good and looks to have overcome her injury. |
| Patti | Strong | Patti has held strong through training and continues to amaze the rest of her hobbling pace group. |

Back to Bed
The Life of a Dog
The house was really quiet . . . suddenly I realized I hadn't seen the dog in quite a bit so I went looking for her.

And I found her! Here she is - looking none too pleased about being located :)
After getting her precious pillow-time interrupted, she slid off the bed and moved about one foot to continue her nap.
This dog acts like she is so tired, she can barely move. You would think its HER, not ME training for the Marathon ;)
Sometimes, I actually feel a bit sorry for her - what kind of dog is so exhausted she needs to fluff all of the pillows into a little pile and then lay on top of them? She must really be tired!
Ok, enough taking pictures of the dog. I am going to the gym - to give her some peace and quiet so she can tell her (well needed, and of course, well deserved) nap.

Resting, Movie Watching, Eating :)
Sunday, my official day of rest!
I spent the day doing all things not related to running: checked out Harry Potter, went and got a Brownine Sundae, got some Starbucks, went to dinner with friends, and then went out for another evening coffee. PERFECT!
Harry Potter was great - but it was slightly different than the book. For those that are "fans", in the past the books and movies have been carbon copies of the other - with the movie simply taking the story of the book and brining it to life. I think as the books get longer, the movies cant include all of the details and story-lines, so some things get cut or left out. While this movie still told the story, there were things I rememberd in the book being notably absent from this movie. I think this trend will continue in the future, as these books keep increasing in size! To tell the whole story, I think you would actually need to make a five hour movie - and even the most avid Harry Potter fan isnt going to sit through that!
Last Week
Even though I didnt do all of the recommended runs (or time lengths of runs) for last week, I still ran almost 24 miles during the week. While that may seem like a lot (and it definitly is for me!) ... I didnt even run the marathon distance in a whole weeks time! At one point, I have to run MORE than I did all last week in one day. And, thats without the eating, sleeping and resting I get to do between each of these runs. Wow. While that seems impossible - each week I think that the distance run on Saturday is going to be imposslble, yet I complete each run and live to tell about it. For the next two weeks we cut back a bit on our Saturday runs, first a 10-miler and then a 90-minute timed run (which at my pace will be less than 9 miles)...so I am looking forward to the upcoming long runs. After our two "easy" runs though, we pump it up to 16 MILES! Hmmm...lets not quite think about that yet.
Today
My knees still hurt from Saturday. I get occasional shooting pains, and they are definitly sensitive to the touch. I am opting not to run today, but I am going to head to the gym in a minute or two to do the elliptical and some strength training. I also need to get on a program of doing all of the excercises and stretches the personal trainer gave to me. So I will make sure to do them today, but more importantly I need to keep doing them every day. Perhaps if I had done them on Saturday and on Sunday, my knees would not be still bothering me today? (Guess I will never know!)
I spent the day doing all things not related to running: checked out Harry Potter, went and got a Brownine Sundae, got some Starbucks, went to dinner with friends, and then went out for another evening coffee. PERFECT!

Pretty Cab
This cab was driving behind us the way to dinner tonight.

Sometimes I have seen cabs decorated around the holidays - particularly Christmas or Halloween. I have never seen one, on a normal day, driving around looking like a circus car.
It has stuffed animals all inside, and on the hood is written "Summoer of Love" and "Go Cubs"...but thats not the weirdest thing. The thing that makes it a bit scary is the pig-head fastened to the grill.

Alive ... And Sortof Well
Training Log
Time:  2:27:41 time  Distance:14 miles   Pace:  10:33min/mi
Just a quick update to say I am alive and "well". The run wasnt easy and my body wasnt to happy with me ... I got "stitches" (cramps) repeatedly during the run, at one point both of my hand fell asleep, and my knees starting hurting around mile 5 (with only 9 more miles go to!). I finished, and we actually paced awesome during the whole time. There were many miles that were under 10:30 minutes (including a 9:07 and a 9:54) and this might be a possible reason why I was getting the stitches - although my body handled the run, the increased speed might have been a bit rough on my breathing.
Funny Run Stuff
During our run we often see a load of strange and funny things. This is probabally for two reasons: 1) we run a long distance, and are bound to come across some interesting characters and 2) we run along a public trail, and public beach, which tend to draw some of the general types you see loitering in random public places as this :) In the past we have seen a guy running while juggling, dogs dressed in costumes and other strange outfits, people running in strange running gear (including jeans, loafers, bikini tops, etc). Today was no exception.
At one point were were crossing a bridge and there was a small dog (who thought it was much bigger) clearly trying to kill another dog as it passed. As we were running, we were kindof laughing about the whole altercation and referred to the dog as "Kujo". When we passed the dog, its owner BARKED AND GROWLED at us. If that isnt wierd enough ... one of my running mates (who wishes to remain anonymous) BARKED AND GROWLED BACK. So, obviously not only are the others we encounter on our runs often of the strange sort ... but we ourselves acurately fall into that category :)

Some Info on Running/Side Stitches
Most of us experience them at one time or another. That sharp twinge of pain just below the rib cage usually on the right. It is particularly common in runners and has been known to slow some down to a walk until the pain subsides.
Up until recently there was no clear explanation for the cause of this annoying cramp, also called exercise related transient abdominal pain (ETAP). Now researchers believe that the side stitch is caused by stretching the ligaments that extend from the diaphragm to the internal organs, particularly the liver. The jarring motion of running while breathing in and out stretches these ligaments. Runners tend to exhale every two or four steps. Most people exhale as the left foot hits the ground, but some people exhale when the right foot hits the ground. It is the later group who seem more prone to get side stitches.

Most people exhale as the left foot hits the ground, but some people exhale when the right foot hits the ground. It is the later group who seem more prone to get side stitches.
Exhaling when the right foot hits the ground causes greater forces on the liver (which is on the right side just below the rib cage). So just as the liver is dropping down the diaphragm raises for the exhalation. It is believed this repeated stretching leads to spasms in the diaphragm.
Stopping a Side Stitch
To stop a side stitch when running, stop running and place your hand into the right side of your belly and push up, lifting the liver slightly. Inhale and exhale evenly as you push up.
Preventing a Side Stitch
To prevent a side stitch, take even, deep breaths while running. Shallow breathing tends to increase the risk of cramping because the diaphragm is always slightly raised and never lowers far enough to allow the ligaments to relax. When this happens the diaphragm becomes stressed and a spasm or "stitch" is more likely.
Some other ways to alleviate the pain of a side stitch include:
- Time your eating. Having food in your stomach during a workout may increase cramping by creating more force on the ligaments (avoid eating one to two hours before a workout)
- Stretching may prevent or relieve a cramp. Raise your right arm straight up and lean toward the left. Hold for 30 seconds, release, then stretch the other side. Slow down your pace until pain lessens.
- Breathe deep to stretch the diaphragm.
- Drink before exercise; dehydration can increase muscle cramps.
- Massage or press on the area with pain. Bend forward to stretch the diaphragm and ease the pain.
- * If you continue to experience pain, see your doctor.

I Am Really Fast Today (Well, Fast For ME!)
Training Log
Time:  28:56 time  Distance:2.86 miles   Pace:  10:07min/mi
So, I just got home from my "30 minute run". I ended up pacing at 10:07, and that includes waiting for the longest stoplight ever and getting hit by a car. Yes, I said I GOT HIT BY A CAR.
As usual, I had this feeling that I didnt want to do my run today :) I dont like the shorter runs, I guess proving that I am definitly built more for distance than speed. After stalling as long as possible, I went out on my route (which often takes me a bit less than 30 minutes, but today that was fine with me). About 1/3 through my run I hit a stoplight, I dont know how long it was, but if it was a minute that wouldnt suprise me. I waited FOREVER. I kept thinking maybe I should stop my watch...but then I was sure the light would change...and then it wouldnt. After the light finally did change, I followed my normal route which takes me directly past Wrigley Field. I like running through there because its usually really quiet and the park is so nice - but I forgot to check if there was a game today ... obviously there is. So I had to run through swarms of people for about 1/3 of my run (the second 1/3). The crowd finally disappated as I got back into my neighborhood and I kept thinking of stopping early: my knees hurt a lot and I was having a bit of a tough time breathing. (I now realize that the breathing was a bit hard because I was obviously running faster than I ususally do!). I turned the corner for my final stretch home, and I was crossing an intersection (during my final 1/3 route) this guy decided to try to turn right. He sure did turn right - right into my legs! And it took him about 5 feet to realize he was hitting me. I landed forward on his hood, as he continued to drive toward me. All this time I am trying to backpeddle with my feet and pound on his hood at the same time.
Despite the fact that this seems to have been quite an unlucky run, I did have some positive outcomes:
1) I ran faster than my normal pace
2) My legs didnt get broken by a guy in a Ford Taurus
I consider myself pretty lucky, because my reflexes are actually extremely slow. I think if I had just been walking across the street when this guy started driving, both my legs would have been crushed. I think because I was running that my senses might have been elevated and my reactions a bit quicker. This is just a theory, but I do know that I dont normally move that fast in response to situations like that. In fact, I may have never moved that fast in my entire life :)

My Lunch Dates
While Wrigley was at the "spa" I met two friends, and their adorable kids, for lunch. Lunch was ok, but its always a riot to see Daniel and/or Paige, and the two of them together "talking" to each other, sharing food, and clapping at random events, makes for some interesting entertainment.
Daniel, of cource, was the BOSS today.
And Paige was nice enough to let Daniel kiss her goodbye.
No workout today!
The past couple of weeks I have been doing my Friday run on Thursdays, and saving Friday for a rest day. But last nights mid-week team workout was really tiring, and I am a bit sore today. So that makes today a rest day, and means I need to get in a run tomorrow. I also need to start doing some of the stretches and exercises the trainer gave me yesterday, so I think doing that (if/when I get around to them today!) is enough exercise for the day ;)

Wrigley's Spa Day
Ok, its not really a spa :( The groomers try to get rid of all the extra dog hair and at the same time make her smell pretty. I tell her she is going to get pampered at the spa so she maybe hates it a bit less (it doesnt work)

But, There Are Things That Make Me Happy Too!
Laura at Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers
Today I went to Accelerated Rehabilitation for a consultation on my knees. The girl that met with me was AWESOME. Nice, smart, totally helpful. She told me that I dont need rehab, and gave me tons of advice and stretches to do, in addition to a resistance band to help me with some of the stretches. This was a free consultation, and she didnt try to sell me a thing (not rehab, not massage...nothing). The news is good, while I am starting to have some problems, its nothing some of these stretches cant fix. Unfortunately, I was hoping she was going to tell me I could miss these killer Wednesday night workouts, but she didnt :( She did tell me (as all of the trainers and coaches have said) to err on the side of less when it comes to the workouts. If I am hurting or I am sore, either cut back or skip a workout. She also said she would call me in a few weeks, if I am not seeing results then I should go back in for a more thorough evaluation and possible rehab.
Cafe Latakia
So I walked into this cute cafe today, after my consultation. I needed to stall before going home because we had some cleaning ladies in the house and I wanted to give them their space :)
I just loved the feeling of this place - and they have free WiFi. I think I will go again soon to see how it works for a study location. Some places dont really like when you hang out there for a long time, and the workers (or owner) keeps giving you dirty looks. There was a girl in there today with some huge books - looks like she was studying for the MCAT, LCAT, something like that. So I am hoping I will be welcome and I plan to go later this week.
My Snoring Dog
Wrigley goes to daycare every Wednesday, and she takes it VERY seriously. She believes in playing ball from the minute she gets there, until the minute they force her to leave. To get a break now and then, she jumps into the pool to cool off. She must have had quite the workout today because she has been snoring like a pig since I got home. How cute is she??

Another Pet Peeve - Lousy Customer Service
First, I want to start off by saying that I have not been exceptionally cranky lately :) I think my recent pet peeve ranting has made some believe that I have hit some sort of emotionally turbulent time - instead I just feel that I have some opinions to voice and that this blog may be a good outlet. I assure you I am not any crankier than usual - though many will agree that I can occasionally be a bit irritable ;)
And onto my next pet peeve - Lousy Customer Service
So, a few weeks ago I noticed that my laptop was uneven...it wobbles on a flat surface. I flipped it over and noticed that one of the grips pads is missing. Its hard to explain what it is, but if you notice on this picture there are little black circles in the four corners...they protrude a bit from the laptop and help stop it from slipping on a surface. While they are nifty when you are working on slippery surfaces (or dont want so scratch wood), its a bit difficult to use your laptop when one is missing!
So I called DELL today, and had to try to explain for 15 minutes to the sales rep what I was talking about. This wasnt because I kept saying "nub" or "thingy" but because the guy on the DELL side of the phone couldnt speak English. After he finally figure it out, he told me that it came as part of a kit, and then asked me to tell him some numbers on the bottom of my laptop. I assumed this was to look up the right part, but no...he was placing an order. So I explained to him, its just a little piece of plastic and I dont know if I need a whole kit. In addition, you didnt tell me what the heck is in the kit and I have no idea what you are trying to order for me. How much is it? He tells me its $21.95 plus shipping and handling (which you know was gonna be like $10). I told him I would rather keep propping my laptop up with little pieces of paper and junk I find around the house than to order a piece of plastic for 30 something dollars :)
Anyway, I was a bit irritated by this whole thing, and decided to see if other people had similar problems. Of course they do! It seems that DELL keeps adding additional call centers in India. Hooray for outsourcing!
I have been irritated with DELL in the past - my laptop seems a bit fragile and pieces of the plastic crack and break. In addition, its just over 2 years old..which is when the warranty ends. And right after the warranty ended the battery refused to take a charge. I tried calling tech-support to see what to do - but I no longer had tech support and they wanted me to enter my credit card number just to get through...there is an automatic charge just to speak to someone. Then I called sales and talked to someone, and I had to order a new battery (again, I surfed around, and this is totally common with the DELL Sony batteries - they die, often right after the warranty expires). The new battery cost me over $100. Despite the fact that I am mad at DELL, I cant help but drool over the new Inspiron. They come in some really cool colors and look SWEET!

Marathon Training Makes You Fat
I frequently talk about my ravenous apetite ... and in fact, the topic of food and eating tends to dominate our long runs on Saturday. Each of us thought we would experience some "physical enhancements" with training, whether it be slimmer waists or smaller thighs - we all expected to SEE results. Well, we are seeing results, but not those expected. All of us have confirmed that since training we have each GAINED WEIGHT.
When we mention to others that we are gaining weight, they state "It must be muscle". We discussed this concept too, and we all agree that its not muscle (muscle doesnt make your pants get tighter, for example). So, what is it? Could it be the pound of pasta I inhale at each meal? The package of cookies that seemed to mysteriously vanish? Maybe its the bag of chocolate-covered-pretzels I just polished off?
Fellow runners talk about family and friends requests to see pictures of their "hot new body", and having people ask us directly "are you loosing weight?". It seems that everyone assumes we must be looking pretty good after almost three months of training - just as we assumed we would. But we arent, and I think we are all wondering what we are doing wrong. I have to admit, the fact that I am not alone is oddly comforting. If it was just me stepping on the scale, watching the lbs pack on, as my friends bragged about their weight loss and need to downsize their wardrobe, I might be wallowing in my misery right now. Instead, I am aware that we are eating more - but also working harder ... and that there must be some logic to it all :)
I did surf around and find that this weight gain is not uncommon ... while its also not uncommon to loose weight. It might be wise to remind myself that simply training for a marathon does not permit me to eat like every meal is my last. If I can create this focus in my life around marathon training, I think maybe I can expand that focus a bit to the food I consume. So I have a new goal on top of training - think before I eat :)

Another Pet Peeve - City Transit
Public transit is never on time, dirty, and the employees are oblivious. Just a min ago I watched a bus stop 30 ft past its stop, let someone off and then keep going - passing the girl who was waiting . . . and couldnt run fast enough to catch it!

Reluctant Runner :(
I woke up today and had it in my head that I wasnt going to run. Not only was the high 89 degrees, but my knees were hurting. I was pretty sure I was going to get in for a consultation from a physical therapist, and so this would be a "rest day". I called the therapy center and they cant get me in until Wednesday! By the time I called (they didnt open until 10:30 AM) it was already above 80 degrees...so then I decided it was too hot to run :)
I ran some errands, hit the grocery store, and did some of my fabulous research. Then I ate lots of junk food I bought at the grocery store and decided I really did need to go do some sort of workout - my excuses were no longer enough. I convinced Jeff to go to the gym when he got home from work, so that way I knew I would go.
Training Log

It was a million degrees in the gym, and my knees are not feeling so great, so I decided that just the fact that I was doing a workout was enough. So I decided that I would do 30 (instead of 40 minutes) at a bit of a slower pace than I normally do for my short runs (10:47 vs 10:30). Now I am home, and my legs are throbbing. I am still not sure doing the workout was the right way to go, but at least I burned off about one of the many cookies I ate.

Pet Peeves
I admit, maybe I am cranky today. It seems that little things keep getting on my nerves and all I can do is think about them. You know how little stuff seems bigger, and drives you nuts? I think that the world knows my pet peeves today, and one at a time is hitting me with them :)
Multiple Calls - Multiple Messages
When you try to call someone and they don't answer, I think its fine for you to call alternate numbers. But it drives me nuts when people leave messages at all numbers. If you leave a message at one number, you gotta give the people a chance to call you back before calling every number you have listed for them and leaving the same message over and over ... and then following it up with an email. There is a such thing as OVERCOMMUNICATION!
Bad Food is Ok - if You Have "Good" Food With it
You see people all the time, they order a huge sundae or fried chicken or something like that ... then they say, "better make it a Diet" when they order their pop. Like its gonna help! Well, we all do it. And today, as I checked all the nutrition labels on everything I placed into my cart at the grocery store ... it seemed to make it allright to put junk food into the cart. And not just one thing - two packages of cookies, chocolate covered pretzels and chocolate covered raisins. Thank goodness I got the low fat / low calorie chicken sausage and low fat buns for dinner - that should make the three cookies I already ate ok!
Strangers Talking to Me
Maybe I am not a friendly person and other people don't mind it - but I hate when random people talk to me. Today, I was putting my groceries in the back of the car and couldnt resist grabbing a cookie. This older guy was walking behind me into the store and said "Can I have a bite?". Um, weird. And ... NO!
Rude Solicitors
So we put ourselves on the "do not call list" a long time ago - I have a feeling it expired or something because we are getting calls like crazy. I think its rude in the first place to call people on the weekends or late at night and try to sell them stuff ... but I know if I dont answer they will keep calling back. So lately I have been answering all of the calls. I listen to their schpeil (because I am so nice) and then politely tell them "no thank you". On two different occasions I have had a solicitor snicker when I said no - like I am evil (for saying no to St. Jude) or an idiot (for passing up this fantabulous deal). I get it that its a job, and they probabaly hate calling us as much as we hate getting the calls ... but snickering? And general rude tones? Rediculous.
Rude Shoppers
Its seems common the people in grocery stores will block an entire isle while they are browsing, and refuse to move their bodies or their carts so that you can pass. In addition, when you are walking down an isle with your cart, and someone is walking towards you with their cart ... its like a game of chicken. I swear, nobody ever moves for me! I am always the "chicken", but I think if I didnt move, there would be some near-fatal isle collisions :)
Ticketmaster
People have been raging about Ticketmaster fees forever. I dont go to a lot of concerts so it never seems like a big deal to me, and since I generally support most forms of business I figured they deserve to add on ticket charges - how else do they make their money? Well, I think I changed my mind! I am going to a show with a few friends and the tickets are $33. Ticketmaster puts a 10.50 service charge on each, and then the venue puts a 4.50 facility charge on top of that. So the tickets are almost $50! Then on top of the price for 4 tickets, there is an "order processing fee" and a "delivery fee". I would really like to know where all of this money goes. They make it seem like the $33 goes right to the artist, thats why they need to charge the fees - to cover costs and make profit. I highly doubt the artist is getting the full-face ticket value. I am officially mad at Ticketmaster.

Pedicures - A Cure For Knee Pain?
My knees were hurting this morning - but I may have found a cure...pedicures! I with with Beca (a fellow TNT member) today to get manicures and pedicures because our aching feet deserved some pampering :) When you get a pedicure, they massage your legs and feet (in addition to making your toes really pretty) and since then my knees have felt pretty good today. Wouldn't that be perfect if the secret to my success was pedicures? (Note: blogger currently wishing on falling star while typing)
In addition to the mani/pedi, Jeff and I ran some errands (including grabbing a big fatty lunch) and I picked up the current issue of Runners World. If I am gonna try to be a runner, I think I need to keep up with the world of a runner, so I have some reading to do for tomorrow! The current issue is the "half-marathon special" and boasts of an article that promises to provide me the secrets to running in the heat ... so I think this issue was made with me in mind :)
We just returned home from our friends, where we barbequed and sat out to enjoy the weather. Though it hit the high 90's today, it has cooled down quite a bit since the sun set, and it turned out to be an enjoyable evening. I played it safe with a turkey-burger, but followed it up with (THREE) brownies which I think more than cancels the turkey-burger out. Oh well, everyone deserves a brownie (or three) every once-in-a-while.
Injuries & Prevention
As I noted before, I am having some problems with my knees. These problems are different than the problems I was having before, and I am going to try to get into a physical therapist tomorrow. I am hoping I can get some guidance for how to handle this week leading up to our 14 MILER. I am also looking for a new class to take as my pilates class ended, and am thinking about a heat-yoga class. The thing is, the class sounds really hard and I am not sure I want to take up an additional difficult workout. I was kindof looking for something thats more stretching and stuff - but am having problems finding something for when I want it. I think I will try this yoga class, but not until next week. In case something goes wrong, I dont want to screw up my fourteen mile run from yoga-overexertion! Next weekend we have a 90 minute run, so I think a yoga class prior shouldnt be as dangerous of a move...

The Heat is On!
As usual, I woke up this morning for my run with about 2 hours of sleep. I was exhausted, and when I took the the dog out aroun 6:15 I noticed the heat already creeping through. It was going to be a hot one....
And it was. Today's high reached 94, and I think it said 87 on my car themometer when we were heading home from the run ... which means, it was HOT. The run was tough, everyone was exhausted and tired. I do have to say it was a bit better than the last 10-miler, but considering that was the worst day of my life thats not saying a whole lot :) I can tell how hot iw was and how much of a drain it took out on my by the fact that I really havent been able to regain my appetite again - and I havent lost my appetite for a single second since training began! I couldnt eat breakfast after the run, and had to force down lunch and dinner just because I know I needed the nutrition. Imagine that!
I also had to take a nap, which is the first time I have really been that exhausted after a run. It would have really been a great nap had the dog not insisted on trying to keep me up between the hours of 3 and 4:30 trying to get fed her dinner. And if I had just sucked it up and fed her at 3, I wouldnt have had to go through an hour-and-a-half of trying to ignore her. Once she was fed, she left me alone and I slept for about an hour-and-a-half :)
Training Log
Time:  1:47:23 time  Distance:10 miles   Pace:  10:44min/mi
The run was rough. We were sweating, burning up, and couldnt stay hydrated. Suprisingly, we kept up our pace almost perfectly for the first 5 1/2 or 6 miles. This is unusual because running in that kind of heat generally slows you down. The average pace ended up being slower because we did drop a bit at the end, making our eventual pace 10:44. This is almost exactly the same as the pace for the last 10-miler, so there is some consistency to my running, which is ideal.

Why Does it Feel Like Summer is Almost Over??
Now that the 4th has come and gone, I get this weird feeling that the summer is over...and yet also that it never really began! Its not to long until school starts again, so I need to get all of my work and research done ... but also make sure to find the time (and ways) to enjoy the summer :)
Today, Jeff had off work and we did just that - "summer stuff". We spent the day at the Art Institute. I really liked the Sarah Hobbs photography, especially this one titled "Insomnia". It felt like she was thinking of me when she did it :(
And I also liked the popular stuff, especially Monet :)

After the museum we went to the Taste of Chicago for a bit, and grabbed some fudge and other fudge-coated goodies before heading home. Now I am back to work, trying to get some productive stuff done before dinner time!
Training Log
Time:  29:43 minutes  Distance:2.86 miles   Pace:  10:23min/mi I ran the same route as yesterday and definitely felt slower. First, it was a log hotter! Second, I am having some pains in my knees (and maybe my shins?) and it slowed me down a bit. I definitely wanted to get the run in today to take tomorrow off - primarily because I want to mimic what I did last week since my 12 miler went so well, but also because I think I need the rest :) Right now my legs are so sore, but I have a feeling that walking around all day probably didnt help. Tomorrow I am going to minimize my activity and focus on being lazy!

Independence Day
Its the 4th of July - Independence Day - and the city was packed with tourists and locals extatic that the threat of rain never panned out. We spent the day at Jeff's cousin's (Danny) birthday party. Of course a birthday party means only one thing ... food! So in addition to celebrating the exciting event of Danny's birthday, we celebrated an excuse to eat :) Hamburgurs, brats, potato salad, fruit, candy and (of course) cake. We head home to beat the traffic rush and went up to our rooftop to watch the local town fireworks. We dont have a close view of any specific fireworks, but over the treetops we can see about 50 different towns celebrations. Some of them are pretty clear - they are big, high and reach over the treetops; others we can barely see. Its pretty great to sit up there on a nice night like this and just check out the view.
Training Log
Time:  28:55 minutes  Distance:2.86 miles   Pace:  10:07min/mi Today would generally have been a team mid-week workout, but with the holiday we were on our own. I scheduled a route that would take me about 30 minutes at my 10:30 pace and head out early this morning to run. I felt like I was going a bit faster, and actually think I should probably be picking up my pace during the week to push myself on my training more. I did go faster (10:07 vs 10:30) so I feel a bit better about slacking earlier during the week ;) My knees are still hurting, and so are the muscles on the outside of my knees...it feels tight or a bit pulled on the outside of my right calf. I think I am going to do another run tomorrow but then take Friday off so that I can rest during the day for the 10 miler on Saturday! The current weather forecast is hot and steamy - so Saturday is gonna be tough.
Progress Made
- Pick up the pace a bit on my weekday run!
- I am still having some issues with pain in my knees and some sort of muscle problems, so I need to figure out whats up before it gets worse later in training.

Grafitti Photography or Document Transription?
Another long day. Sometimes a day just flies by and you think "where did the time go?" ... but I havent had one of those in a while. Lately my days seem really long, almost endless.
I met my research partner this morning to map out our paper and some other stuff. Then I trecked down to campus to meet with an IT-guru about getting better results on document "word recognition". (While waiting for the bus this girl was taking pictures of grafitti on nearby signs and poles. I know that my life is not terribly exciting, but I do have better hobies than graffiti photography!) That was a total failed trip. I hung out in my office for a bit with another student, and then headed home. I got home and went to the gym for a bit, then ate dinner. Since then I have been working on another research project (the one I needed help with word recognition for). Since I cant get documents to read properly, I have to manually transcribe 30+ articles from print version to word version. The work is tedious, gruelling, gives me a headache and makes my contacts dry out :( (I retract my earlier comment re: grafitti photography. Grafitti photography is much more interesting than re-typing documents>
I didnt go to the Taste today, just couldnt fit it in. Its too bad I couldnt go earlier during the day when PrincessRunner mentioned it wasnt very crowded. Now that would have been sweet!
Training
No real training log today, it was a cross-train day. I did 45 minutes on the elliptical then some strength training. I generally have not kept up on the strength training, but my knees still hurt today from Saturdays run so I know I need to work on it! Hopefully the fact that I did it Sunday and Tuesday will help a bit... instead of waiting more days (um, like a week!) in between each workout. I need to be better about integrating strength training into my workouts and know it will help me in my distance runs.

It Must Have Caught Up With Me...
After my Saturday run I felt pretty good ... and had a usual day to follow with an early-to-bed evening. I woke up early on Sunday and was busy the whole day with a Cubs game and a trip to the suburbs. Last night I got to bed a bit later than expected and had to wake up early to take the car into the dealer.
Well - today I am exhausted. My knees are still sore, both of them on the outer-side and under-side of the knee. My eyes cant stay open. I also have a bit of a headache :( I think I just need to eat a bit healthier and get a good nights rest, but I have a feeling that my 20 minute run will be postponed until later in the week and today is gonna become a rest day! Its not even 5pm, and I seriously could go to bed right now. I have been pondering a nap, but since I generally dont sleep well at nights napping is not something that I like to do.
I am working on some of my research for two projects I am in the middle of - and those are also probably part of the reason I am so sleepy. Unfortunatly, my research is not the sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of research ... its the kind that makes you a bit drowsy :)
I have been thinking of hitting the Taste of Chicago one of these days because I havent been in quite a few years. But then I think, do I really want to put up with this????
Maybe if I go on Tuesday and fight with the crowds for 45 minutes it will count as CrossTraining. But...does CrossTraining count when you stop every 10 minutes and eat some sort of fried mystery object? I think probably not :(

Where Does the Time Go?
Its 10:17 pm and I feel like my day has barely begun. I am trying to get some work done and my contacts are not cooperating - my vision is blurry and I am sleepy :( But I don't feel like I accomplished enough with my day and am attempting to spend a few more minutes cramming in some "productive time"!
Thank goodness today was a Rest/Stretch day - my knees have been a bit sore all day, the right one especially. This pain is different than the knee stuff I was fighting earlier in training. Seems like each day I am encountering something new with this whole process!
I woke up this morning after a great nights sleep. As a bit of an insomniac, Saturday nights tend to be quite heavenly with the drain the long run has on me. Most people I know have been napping after our Saturday runs - but I refuse. I stay up as late as possible, and when I go to bed I sleep like a dream. Its my favorite night of the week ;) Jeff and I went to the gym and I worked on some strength training. I think my new knee problems are IT-band related...which means I need to strengthen some muscles! After the gym, we showered, grabbed some lunch at a local bar (that has and amazing Turkey Burger!) and went to the Cubs game. We didn't stay for the whole game (they won though!) because we had to head to Jeff's parents in Wheaton for dinner. Jeff's Great Aunt Irene has been in town for about two weeks and is leaving tomorrow - so we went for dinner and to say our goodbyes.
Now we are home and I am trying to get some work done. I have lots of stuff to prep for a meeting on Tuesday in additon to some of my research work. Tomorrow I get to go to the dealership to bring our car in for service - last time it took them 4 hours for a routine check-up / service appointment ... so I am quite excited to see how much of my day I will be spending there tomorrow.
