Happy Howl-O-Ween!

Ok, please do not be afraid. Here are some pictures of Wrigley in her Halloween costume. I know its quite frightful ... she is a skeleton! BOO! As you can tell, Wrigley sure does love to dress up. She is already thinking ahead about what she will wear for Christmas pictures this year.

Training Log
Time:  30:00 time  Distance:2.79 miles   Pace:  10:42 min/mi
I had intended on doing 40 minutes today, but got hoodwinked by some kids in my building having a bake sale. The proceeds went to their student-organization...so I had to buy something, of course. And since they just gave me my purchase on a disposable plate, I had to eat it right away. Then, after my pastry consumption (oh, and some Halloween candy with breakfast) I hit the treadmill. My legs (shins, specifically) have been bothering me and they continued to bother me during my super-long-30-minutes and my stomach wasnt to happy with me. So my 40 quickly became 30 and thats my story.

Is This A Costume?

I was on my way to class this morning when this guy rode by on is bike - wearing a fully lit stoplight. its Halloween, so I expected to see an odd thing or two ... But I have this weird feeling its not actually a costume. It has to be ... right?

Best Day Ever

Ok, today is the best day ever. I actually had quite a few good things happen today (found someone to work on an article with me, got my new kicks delivered) but none of those matter. Why? Because I went into Walgreens a few minutes ago to get some Halloween candy for my kids tomorrow but found something that just made my day. No, my week. Actually, I think it made my year.

Cadbury has come out with a Christmas Creme Egg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If anyone isnt familiar with the creme egg, its a candy I have been consuming in massive quantities since childhood. But, since its an Easter-only candy ... I do all of my annual consumption in about a week or two time period. But all of that has changed. I now have two opportunities a year to gorge myself on these wonderful, perfect things.

Waste Energy Much?

This sign at an outdoor train stop indicates that heat will be available Nov 1 ... tomorrow. Yet despite the fact that its sunny & 60 today - the heat lamps were going strong. Maybe the CTA wouldnt be broke if they could manage the little things :)

Halloween Candy Personality?

An article in today's Washington Post sure sparked my interest. According to "What's Your Halloween Candy Personality?" , because I generally opt for the Butterfinger, I am "evasive, slippery, not necessarily to be trusted". Hmm...Thats probably true. Check out what your Halloween candy choice says about you.

Hit the gym today to squeeze in a quick run. It was quite the busy day and I am pretty excited I actually did my run.

PARTY TIME!!!

This is the best party I can get myself invited to for Halloween. Nothing like partying it up in the student center with my fellow business students. Oh wait, free food? Ok...I will probably go:)

Huh?

My school is hosting the AIBA boxing championships...and this sign is right outside the pavilion. No sticks? Good thing they warned me. I just found this really sweet tree branch and thought Id bring it to whack some spectators. Guess I cant now.

BRRRRRR!

10-miler today. Distance wasnt bad - but the weather got us a bit. On the way out (5-miles) it was cool, but we felt ok. About 2 miles into it, a coach yelled to a training team (one not at all affiliated with us) "Don't worry! The wind is at your back when you turn around!". We were like, what wind? About 3 miles later we figured out exactly what wind they were talking about. The 5 mile run on the return was head on into some pretty cold wind. At this point we were wet and sweaty so running into the cold wind was quite unenjoyable.

My knees have been hurting me again after my runs - something I haven't had to really deal with since earlier in training. I guess I have to go back to the icing routine. I know I should do it anyway, but things just get a bit tiring after so many months of training ... I think I am neglecting some important things as I get a bit bored with the whole process! Icing and stretching tonight - I swear!

Training Log
Time:  1 hour 48 minutes time  Distance:10 miles   Pace:  10:48 min/mi
I had to do a bit of gusstimating about the pace. We stopped a couple of times along the run and I thought we would quickly resume so I didnt stop my watch. (I keep my watch going during rest-stops to get a pacing time that would be similar to a marathon experience). But a couple of our stops were lengthy, beyond a rest-stop-type-experience. So I did a bit of time tampering to try to get our actual pace figured out ;)

ARRRHHH BLOGGER!

I have been trying for abotu 24 hours to post from my mobile and its not working. That means there are about 10 posts (most of them duplicates) sitting somewhere that will all randomly pop up on my blog when they feel like it. So irritating :(

I apologize in advance for the junk that is (hopefully) soon to come...

Update (2:07 p.m.): I may have criticized Blogger too soon ... I called my cell phone provider (T-Mobile) and they said if I dont turn off my phone often enough the phone gets confused as regards to the appropriate cell tower or something and it will screw up your texting. They tried to act like I was the problem because I never turn my phone off...but it sure sounds like a provider problem if you asked me :) I turned it off - lets see what happens!

Halloween: Curse or Blessing?

I have been ravenous all day - eating anything in my path. The buzzer rings ... And this wonderful gift from my mom was delivered. Now Jeff and I are going to spend the rest of the evening in gluttony. But hey, it is for Halloween and I DID run today!

Training Log
Time:  40:00 time  Distance:3.67 miles   Pace:  10:54 min/mi
Ran at an easy pace while I watched an old episode of "Crossing Jordan". It's not a show I watch, but I do have to admit that watching a tv show while on the treadmill sure does make the time go by. I had no intention on doing a faster workout, so the tv was quite complementary. I think if I was actually trying to do a hard workout, having a television on would likely be a link somewhere in a chain of unwanted outcomes :)

Marketing: When making sense is optional

So often an attempt at wit or creativity just comes out stupid. Here is a Chicago bus stop ad. The point is to promote some new stuff going on at our cultural institutions...but unless you read a paragraph of tiny print you'd never know that.

Running Elvii

The Las Vegas Marathon & Half Marathon currently has almost 100 people from around the world coming to Las Vegas to run as Elvis. The desire is to break the world record for people dressed as Elvis participating in an activity ... and so they need a minimum of 148 people to run as "The King". Thank goodness Elvis is running because lately I am not (but I swear, I have a run on the schedule for tomorrow!!)

This Elvis running thing made me curious, what other world records have Elvis impersonators made?

Dogs Always Get the Best Accesories!

Wrigley, the family dog, can be considered a bit spoiled. But at the same time she has reason to envy many of her other doggie friends. For example, she doesnt get any table food and she never gets to ride around in a dog stroller. (I know, we deprive her!)

While she does get some preferential treatment, she certainly isnt treated like a celebrity :) But, if you want to treat your dog like the queen she is ... get her some bling. Here are some options from Love Dogs Diamonds in case you have some cash burning a hole in your pocket.

This is something for the simple (yet elegant) canine - not too flashy. With 595 hand-set diamonds, this one is a steal at $312,000.

For a more feminine touch, adorn your pooch with this beauty. At $380,000 its well worth the looks of admiration your dog will receive when strolling down Park Avenue on your way to the doggie salon.

And finally, for the dog who already has everything, spoil her with this one-of-a-kind 52-carat colar. The center diamond is 7 carats, large enough to force any toy-breed to hang their head from the sheer weight of it.

I sure hope Wrigley doesnt read my blog. I dont want her to start making extravagant demands.

Its a Sad Thing...

When your dog has plans for Halloween you dont.

Allergy Testing :(

I got this done a bunch of years ago - apparently BEFORE they computerized their records ... Which means I have to do it again. I guess getting candy from the school mascot wasnt such a good sign after all.

You know its gonna be a good day

When your school mascot is out bright and early - handing out candy! While he did slap my hand each time I tried to take one, I eventually emerged victorious.

Caffeine: Friend of Foe?

I have heard forever that caffeine dehydrates you. They say, dont have it before a run, cut caffeine before a marathon, etc. And the more I try to "cut" caffeine, the more I actually seem to consume. I used to have a few lattes a week ... now I have one every day of the week.

But lucky for me, the recent research suggests that caffeine may not be so bad after all! While caffeine does have a diuretic effect, this effect is not severe. And, more importantly, the study suggests that people who regulary consume caffeine build up a tolerance to the diuretic effect!!! So that means that the fact that I now have a latte-a-day is good :) Some research also suggests that caffeine taken about 60 minutes before exercise can increase endurance - and that combining caffeine & excercise can help prevent skin cancer! Not only is this all good news for me, but its good news for some running clubs that actually center their activities around running like the Joe Coffee Running Team.

Training Log
Time:  30:00 time  Distance:2.87 miles   Pace:  10:27 min/mi
I did a 30 minute run and increased my pace for each mile. Average was about 10:27, but I started out at a 10:40 or so and picked it up when I hit another mile. Supposedly that stuff helps build endurance, but mostly I think it just makes me tired.

Running & Eating Take Up 1/2 My Day

In the beginning of training season, like a million months ago, we started our runs at 7 am. Due to the change in seasons, the time the sun rises, and the temperature drop - we now run at 8. By the time we finished 12 miles, and had a nice long breakfast (um, lunch?) it was after 1:00 pm. Where did the day go? Yeah, I got in a workout. But now I am exhausted and want to sit on the couch for the rest of the day :) Unfortunately thats not an option. A good friend of mine from high school is getting married today so Jeff and I are off the the burbs dressed to our finest. (Cant wait until I try to squeeze my swollen runner's feet into those heels).

Training Log
Time:  2:09:48 time  Distance:12 miles   Pace:  10:49 min/mi
Its funny, I looked at my first 12-miler ... and the overall pace was the same. (I dont know if thats good or bad!) There is one major difference though - when we first started running I stopped my watch for "breaks", so I can figure out the speed I was actually running at. It turned out that the breaks were pretty lengthy, which I didnt know because I didnt time them. Eventually I changed my practice and now time for the whole thing. There are two reasons I do this: 1) race times include breaks ... they dont stop the clock if you have to use the porta potty! and 2) we take less breaks now, one real benefit of training. While my pacing was the same as my first 12, I took the first 6 very easy. In fact, we hung out a bit here and there and chatted and/or waited for other members of the Vegas Crew. On the way back, Kevin & I picked it up a bit - on the way out were were running about 10:30's and on the way back it was much closer to 9:30's. (You can tell by the actual pace about how lengthy these "breaks" were!)

This is an Expensive Hobby

I have talked about this topic several times with my new running buddies ... but running (particularly the act of taking up the sport) is quite an expensive hobby! I am on my third pair of shoes, have consumed countless packs of shot-blocks, "renourished" with many stacks of pancakes after a long run, bought countless pieces of wicking apparel ... and since the Chicago debacle have added the cost of a trip to Vegas (and additional race registration) to the tally. My costs continue to rise as I move into another season and have had to purchase apparrel that will get me through running in midst of a Chicago winter. And to add to all of that, the park district in in the process of shutting down our water fountains along our running routes - so today I had to buy a hydration pak :(

I know that many will argue, but I still dont identify myself as a runner. I get the whole philosphy behind "I run, therefore I am a runner", but in my mind a runner ultimately seeks out of some source of pleasure - I run out of a sense of duty. I never ran before marathon training and originally thought I would never run again after I got that marathon under my belt. I run because I set a goal and I am working towards it. But now that I have all this money and time invested in this hobby - does that investment go down the drain if I move onto something else after Vegas? For example, since I have realized that physics suggest running may not be my ideal sport I have thought of taking up something more appropriate for my physique like rowing or swimming. But with a closet full of apparel, a fancy new hydration belt, and a pair of fresh Mizunos I might have to hit the pavement every once-in-a-while just to get my $'s worth :)

Friday Funnies
The majority of running-related conversations I have (outside of those revolving around the "Gee this sport is expensive!" topic) have to do with various fitness topics: nutrition, strength, recovery, etc. Not only do we seek to improve our form, our physiques and our times ... but we also seek to become healthier in other aspects of our lives. It seems that running eventually seeps into all areas of life whether we like it or not. Well, this doesnt appear to be what's going on with the Samford Stogies Racing Team. These guys (and girls) run races with cigars in their mouths. Quite an interesting concept :)
Just Because
This has nothing to do with running, but something that put a smile on my face. If you listen to the radio, or have attended any sporting events this year ... you know the song "Crank Dat". An annoyingly catchy song, complete with its own dance, has swept the nation. And it looks like even Barney cant ignore the hype.

New Kicks!

I thought I would have been in post-marathon mode right now ... but obviously I am not. Since I am still pre-marathon, I realized I was going to need a new pair of shoes for marathon attempt #2. I ordered the same shoes as I am currently running in ... but in a new color. That ought to add some excitement to training!
Training Log

Strange run today. The weather was just hovering between beautiful summer day and tornado. At points during my run the wind was so severe that I seriously was not moving foward ... it was like some sort of slow motion video option or something :) The entire time, I just didnt want to be running. So I ran the first 2.5 miles at about 10:05 pace but then picked it up at the end because I just wanted to get it over with. I debated in my head over quitting or speeding up - and chose to speed up. Now I am a bit tired and sore. I think my body may not necessarily have been in agreement with my mind's decision to pick up the pace!

Early Holiday Shopping?

Pilates again, followed by an easy run. I am on the treadmill since I am already at the gym - so my runs on Mon & Wed are automatically indoors. Funny how I originally feared running outdoors, but now I really find a treadmill challening. Luckily I found my mp3 player so the time went by pretty fast. Tomorrow I am going to head to the lakefront and get a run in with real fresh air and actual secnery.

A Little Bit of Politics

I try to refrain from bringing the political discussion into my everyday life - this blog included. I am assuming that I might talk about it more when we get into the heat of it, but I always try to maintain a neutral position. Politics and religion ... you know, the stuff you just dont want to touch :)

But, my husband just sent me this pretty cool link. If you are interested in finding out which of the current Presidential candidates align with your beliefs, take this quick quiz. It can often be difficult to figure out what these guys (and gal!) stand for and how they match up with what you are thinking ... and I think this is a pretty awesome tool to do just that. Most importantly, I was totally suprised with who lined up with me and realized I need to look at these candidates a bit more in the months to come!

The Cure?

I have a tendency to reward myself with food ... and to console myself with food. Basically, whether I am up or down, food is often the answer. Recently I noted that this trend often includes ice cream...and the skipping of a run. I swear this is not conscious, I can't figure out why this correlation exists. But I just did it again. I decided today to skip my run. I am still a bit out-of-sorts, a bit sore, and have a small cold that is still hanging on. So what do I do? Heat up some cookies, put some vanilla ice-cream on top, and chomp away. Is this some sort of medical condition? obsessive-compulsive-run-skipping-ice-cream-eating-disorder? Well, I think I may have found the cure. I am going to hire Andy Samburg (Saturday Night Live) to follow me around. Check out this video:

The Hunt For Doodie Bags

Its Blog Action Day - a day to think about ways that we can make a difference. I am not sure I am ready to commit to all of the changes I should be making, but Wrigley is interested in taking some steps towards becoming a Green Dog. In August I bought some Hartz bio-degradable waste bags in my effort to help the environment. Well, we ran out and I needed some replacements - and since it is Blog Action Day, I had the motivation to get some. I got the original ones at Target and thought I would check a pet store, assuming they would have more selection. I was wrong :) I went to Petco and they only had one kind. I stood there staring at the isle forever - I couldnt believe they only had one kind! Anyway, I got them (and the cute fire-hydrant dispenser too!). Bags on Board makes quite a few products, including some pretty cute bag dispensers as well. According to the website:
"Bags on Board is a compact, refillable dispenser which houses a roll of 15 large bio-degradable doggie clean-up bags. It attaches to any kind of leash - standard or retractable. With Bags on Board, you'll always have bags with you."

Not all of their bags were clearly marked "bio-degradable" and those that were said that they did not meet California standards. But ... I can't find any info pertaining to that on the website ;)

I don't know how much using these bag's can really impact anything, I have to figure its better than using the typical plastic bag. There are some other alternatives:
Terra has posted about dog waste and promotes the "Doggie Dooley". This contraption is meant for a backyard and acts as a sort of septic tank. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately!) we dont have a yard (the joys of city living) so this option is not available.

If only I could find the product made famous in the movie Envy: Vapoorize. If I could just make it all dissappear ... now that would make things so much easier!

And since the VaPoorizer doesnt really exist, it looks like I need to find an alternative ways to eliminate doggie doodie. The folks in San Francisco are looking into using pet waste as an alternative fuel source. Maybe I can just pack up all of Wrigley's waste and ship it to San Francisco?

This morning I could not find my mp3 player. I seriously almost freaked out. I have been going for a run on the treadmill on Mondays & Wednesdays after my Pilates class ... since I am already at the gym. Today is a Monday - which means a treadmill run. AND NO MUSIC!!! I kept trying to think of excuses as to why I couldnt do my run, but just was unable to be creative. In result, I spent the longest 30 minutes of my life on the treadmill. It was so boring and tedious, but I did it. I am currently patting myself on the back in honor of my determination and will-power ;)

Blah Sunday

Yesterday I was back to the long run (albeit a short "long" run) and my regular busy weekend schedule. We had dinner with Jeff's family in the suburbs, and Wrigley and Annie showed each other their Halloween costumes. Wrigley also decided to attack a puppy (totally cute pug named Gordon) because he got too close to her most prized possession ... a frisbee. All that excitement wore me out, and Wrigley too ... and we both dozed off a bit in the car on the way home. Today is your typical football Sunday, with a dissapointing Bears/Vikings outcome. Now its back to some school-work and some travel planning. Booking flights for Las Vegas today!

Saturday's Training Log
Time:  1:27:40 time  Distance:8 miles   Pace:  10:58 min/mi
Three of us from the new Vegas Crew met Saturday morning to get in 8 miles. Unlike the previous weekend in which the Chicago Marathon actually had to be cancelled due to excessive heat, this weekend was in the 40's early morning with highs in the low 60's (go figure). Did the first 4 miles WEARING GLOVES. Starting the regular training routine again this week ... not so sure how I feel about these upcoming long runs ;)

It Took 5 Days To Write This?

This message popped into my inbox at 1:37 (central) today...
Dear Runners,

For 17 years I have been honored to serve as Executive Race Director of The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, a race steeped in a 30-year tradition of providing the ultimate marathon experience for runners.

The record high temperatures and humidity at Sunday’s race made for a challenging day for marathoners. The conditions on Sunday presented me with the single most difficult decision I have ever made as race director. While that was a frustration to many, I stand behind the decision to end the race early– it was a necessary safety measure. However, I also recognize that because of the conditions and my decision, many of our runners did not have the experience they trained for and expected.

As an organization dedicated to providing the very best experience in the industry, the results have left us disappointed as well. Our team has spent the last several days reviewing the details and we are listening to runners, staff and volunteers. Rest assured that we take the day’s events - and your comments - seriously.

We are reviewing all details and feedback as we plan to continue the tradition of our race in 2008 and beyond. Offering the best experience possible to runners always has been our priority and it remains a commitment of the highest importance.

My personal gratitude goes to each of you, as well as to staff and volunteers, for participating in the race this year. I share in your disappointment, if you did not have the experience you expected.

I certainly hope to be able to greet you at our finish line in the years ahead, in the grand fashion that has characterized The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon for so many years.

Sincerely,
Carey Pinkowski
Executive Race Director

Friday Funnies

As I said, I have fortunately gotten my humor back (and glad to see many others have as well). This is a good thing, because in order to get back into two more months of training...I think I need a good sense of humor!

The Vegas Crew
I love Las Vegas, I am not gonna lie. Originally when I decided to do a marathon, I found the Las Vegas one and was smitten. But Team in Training didnt do Vegas ... so I decided on Chicago. In a strange twist of fate, I am now actually doing the Las Vegas Marathon! And, I have rallied my troops and we now have "The Vegas Crew". One TNT mentor (Danny) was already signed up for Vegas, so I can't say I had any influence on him...but our crew now consist of 7: Danny, myself, Patti, Beca, Kevin, Bradley and Allyson. With two on the fence - Cara and Lark ... if we can sell them we have 9 :) I honestly think that this trip is going to be awesome and am looking forward to my new "first" marathon.

Onto the Funnies...
Marathon Cheaters!
Mexican politician takes a shortcut
What were the clues?
1) The guy crossed the finish line in a windbreaker and pants ... and wasnt sweating. Despite the fact it was 60 degrees.
2) He ran 15 kilometers between the 20-kilometer and 35-kilometer marks) in 21 minutes. Thats 9.32 miles ... at a pace of 2.16 per mile.

Maybe he got tips from Rosie Ruiz, the winner (later disqualified) of the 1980 Boston Marathon?
What were the clues?
1) No pictures of her anywhere on the course before the finish line
2) Not one runner who finished within a few minutes before or after her recalled seeing her at any point of the race
3) Spectators claimed to have seen her jump from the crowd into the race shortly before the finish line

Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice...
And dont think Ms. Ruiz was an amatur at the marathon-cheat game. She got her qualifying time for Boston in the 1979 New York City Marathon - in which she rode the subway during the race.

Want a Chicago Marathon Medal?
Buy one on eBay! There are three up there right now ... and that might not be the end of it.

Looking for a cool race shirt?
Order the official "Michael Scott's Dunder Mifflin Scranton Meredith Palmer Memorial Celebrity Rabies Awareness Pro-Am Fun Run For The Cure" T-Shirt. (Too bad its not wicking)

Can't forget my somecards!

Training Log

Head out for my second run AMM (After Marathon Meltdown). My body still feels "funny" a bit sore and tired. Tomorrow we are meeting by the lake to get the Vegas Crew on track for 26.2 in December ... so today was an easy run to keep me in gear for my "real marathon" :)

Post Chicago Marathon

Marathon Alternatives
I have already decided on Las Vegas as my "replacement" marathon, but there are others out there that are still trying to figure out what to do. There are quite a few marathon's that are offering deals to Chicago participants...here are a few I have learned of!

Denver - October 14 - FREE
Persons registered for the Chicago Marathon can register online for the Denver Marathon and enter the online referral code ChicagoRunner or register in person on Friday or Saturday, October 12 or 13, at the Denver Marathon Expo.
Check out the press release

Des Moines - October 20 - $15 off entry
All you need to do is email the race director (info@desmoinesmarathon.com) to get your registration instructions.
Read a Chicago Tribune article about the offer here

Indy Classic - November 3
While there isnt a discount for entry ... the organizers did re-open registration for Chicago runners. The event was previously closed. (Read article)

Thank Goodness For Humor
Now that its been a few days, we are seeing some humorous interpretations of Sunday's events. Last night I went to dinner with the new Vegas crew - and we ended up sharing our stories (its the first time we have met since the marathon) and laughing our heads off. Its just surreal when you try to describe what happened. And since many participants are not feeling like wearing the official Chicago Marathon gear ... we have some alternates already on the market.

Chicago Marathon Survivor T-Shirt
Beat The Heat T-Shirt
"Finishing the marathon even though it was cancelled: Priceless" T-Shirt
"Thirst Annual Chicago Fun Run" T-Shirt
"Just Finish" T-Shirt

Exciting News!!!

Wrigley's Halloween costume arrived today! I know that you are dying to know what it is ... but I am going to have to keep that a secret until the big day. I dont want to spoil the suprise. But, I can recap some of her previous costumes in case you are interested ;)

Oh yeah...she likes to dress up for other holidays as well!

Someone Else Didnt Get The Message

Instead of dwelling on the "marathon meltdown" we should try to figure out why people have yet to realize that the Cubs got eliminated about a week ago. GO BEARS!

Looks Like My School Is On Fire

Oh well... I am done for the day and its an ugly building anyway :)

Back To Training

Its obvious I am back to training. Today I had a cookie and latte for lunch :)

The coaches from Team In Training have offered to help us out with a training schedule, but we still dont have it ... so right now I am just guessing. There are schedules out there that talk about how to "maintain" your training level for a marathon...but I cant find any that talk about how to set your training clock back a bit in the event you actually didnt get to complete your marathon on the date you originally expected :) For now we are just winging it until we get some more structure.

Here are some of the tips I have found thus far:
Response from Coach Jenny (Runners World) to a similar question
Generally, this is what she says
  • Take this week to recover & allow your body to heal from Sunday's miles and heat.
  • This week, focus on easy paced cross-training, short easy runs (later in the week) and stretching.
  • This week, also focus on re-fueling your body with foods rich in complex carbs, lean protein and electrolytes.
  • This weekend: try running 60-70 minutes to gague general feeling. If things feel normal and good, begin to gradually ramp up your mileage.
She then gives tips for training for a race in December.
Week 1
Run 60-70 minutes this weekend
Weeks 2 & 3
Give yourself two weeks of easy running and shorter long runs.
Week 4
Include long runs of 10-12 miles
Week 5
15-17 miles, and follow your normal taper into the next marathon.

Coach Jenny also says: "Avoid over-training for this next marathon. You have your summer training under your belt and will carry it to the next race."

Training Log

I did run today after Pilates. I was actually nervous! My body is still a bit sore from Sunday, and in addition I thought I would never "have" to run again. I was actually looking forward to not having to train - to see if my body or mind actually begain to desire a good run. Thus far I have not experienced any sort of love-of-running and instead have been running out of duty. In order to train and prepare, I must run. Looks like I wont have the ability to elect to run until December ... and am back on the training wagon :) Anyway, I did a short 30-minute run at a comfortable pace. My muscles actually loosened up during the run so it turned out to be a really good idea. And, compared to Sunday, todays run was actually enjoyable!

Viva Las Vegas!

On Sunday, December 2, I will be participating in the third annual Las Vegas Marathon! I registered last night (as did Patti and Beca) so its official. We are so excited to continue our journey - to have the opportunity to pursue this dream and now with the added benefit of a Vegas vacation :) I have walked The Strip many times (twice, in fact, this year alone) - but have never even attempted to run in "Sin City". December will actually be quite cool, and a city that can sometimes be unforgiving will welcome 15,000 marathoners (and 10,000 half-marathoners) with open arms. As I believe luck can only be on my side after my first marathon experience, I plan to spend a good amount of my "recovery" time at the tables ... counting on Lady Luck to reward me for my dedication and hard work!

Check out some highlights from the 2006 Las Vegas Marathon!

To My Loyal Fan Club
Current plans are to arrive on Saturday before the race, and go home on Tuesday. I invite all my friends and family to join me in Vegas! While Saturday night will be early (VERY EARLY - 6 AM MARATHON START TIME!!!) I can promise Sunday night will not be an early one. And we could still use all the support we can get on our 26.2 mile journey.

Announcement ... Coming Soon

So, I still have a reason to blog. I have yet to complete a marathon and thus this blog still serves its purpose! But, I have officially decided the "real" marathon I will be running. I will make the official announcement tomorrow as soon as some things are organized :)

Its back to training. Back to complaining. Back to consoling (and rewarding) myself with ice-cream. Its been difficult to re-evaluate my life in the aftermath of Sundays occurances. I thought I would be looking towards my next mission in life. I thought that eating all of these carbs would again become sinful. And most importantly I thought I was going to be able to wear shoes that are so-cute-they-are-worth-the-pain-and-suffering. I wasn't sure I was going to handle this setback very well. Its as if I am stuck in time - with the object I desire just always a few feet ahead and slipping out of my grasp as I reach for it. But I have to admit, now that I have chosen my "replacement marathon" I am actually totally excited. I dont have to train for much longer, still get to carbo-load, still get my most precious Saturday morning breakfasts with my running mates ... and now get to do a DESTINATION MARATHON.

I am taking one additional day off training. I dont really need it - but I am still wrapping up my pity-party. Starting tomorrow I am back on the wagon. Pilates followed by a run. Ultimately I still have the same objective and I am still 100% confident it will get done. There will be some small re-adjustments but I am looking forward to my new (extended) journey.

Mother Nature is a Cruel Lady

For one of the few times in my life, I am at a loss for words. I have been waiting to post until I get my thoughts together - but unfortunately I do not see that happening any time soon. Anyone who has followed my blog, or the Chicago Marathon, should (by now) have some sort of awareness of what happened yesterday. Extreme heat and a variety of other factors created situations severe enough that the organizers actually shortened/cancelled the event. There are conflicting reports everywhere, and I don't want to get myself into the current banter. I cannot even explain in words the things I saw or what type of experience I had. While some were able to complete the actual marathon course, I was not one of those individuals. After being diverted back to the finish from mile 16, I entered Grant Park and was informed over the speaker system that those that did not have the opportunity to complete the full course had participated in a "fun run". Yeah, right.

Before I move on, I do want to say a couple of things "on the record":
  • I confirm many of the reports about the lack of water and Gatorade. Patti and I had to stop and drink some dirty standing water from a big fountain (there were many others doing so too) after not getting water for 5+ miles. We finally found water at the 3rd station...almost 6 miles in. The first tables were all out and we did get some at the end of that aid-station. Patti had to get water poured from a gallon straight into her mouth and I got a cup finally at the end table. There was no Gatorade at any of the tables.
  • Despite the race organizers repeated claims that they knew they might have to cancel the event and were prepared for having to do so, I experienced what was close to chaos and did not see an ounce of indication that there was some sort of structured contingency plan.
  • Communication about what was happening was nill. I was informed by (what looked like) High School volunteers at the aid station just before the 16 mile marker that the marathon had been "cancelled". From that point I did not hear any additional information until we reached Grant Park. The majority of the runners and spectators around me did not have a clue what was going on - and we didnt really believe what we heard. I called my husband who was waiting for me further into the course, and he hadnt heard a thing.
  • From the point where we heard, we had to walk 2.12 miles to Grant Park. Even if there was water at the aid stations (as organizers claim) ... there wasnt a single aid station on the re-route until we got to Grant Park. So in addition to the confusion, there was a 2+ mile walk (or run, for some who had no clue what was going on) until a temporary aid station was set up. That station had water only (no Gatorade).
  • Organizers claim 24,933 finished. But when I got to Grant Park and went to chip removal - they told me I had to cross the finish first. I had to walk several more blocks to the finish line, cross, then walk back to chip removal. So individuals were basically "forced" to finish - and now organizers are reporting those as some sort of official finisher count.
  • Many articles, comments, bloggers, are talking about the one positive note: the support of spectators. The amount of injuries (and perhaps deaths) was kept LOW in compared to what it could have been - thanks to the awesome people out to support the event. Individuals were setting up their own aid stations - offering water, ice Gatorade, hoses, YOU NAME IT! I have never seen so many selfless acts. Individuals buying water/Gatorade/ice at local Walgreens and standing on the course just handing it out to runners. People standing in front of their homes spraying hot runners with hoses. Strangers asking runners "is there anything you need?" or "is there anything I can do to help?". It was simply amazing and I applaud each and every one of these individuls - they truly made a difference and likely saved some lives.
In my opinion this experience was a debacle. While after reading about the injuries, heat impact, etc, I am leaning towards agreeing that cancelling the event was logical. But those orchestrating the event were ill-prepared, communication was poor, and the entire situation was generally out-of-control. With proper resources during the race, and clear communication when cancellation was decided, I believe that while runners would be saddened and dissapointed ... they would have understood. Perhaps it would take a few hours (or days) for this understanding to occur, but it would have happened. Now we have issues all over the board that will be difficult to resolve - and thousands (even 10's of thousands) of individuals who believe they have been wronged. Many of whom (I believe) will be stirring things up for the forseeable future. I would not be suprised to see several lawsuits initiated by the end of this month.

What's Next?
As I said, I dont want to keep re-living this experience. Instead I do need to move forward ... and more importantly think of the positives :)

I have trained for a Marathon, and I intend on completing a Marathon. I have done some searching and there are still some events that take place before the year ends with some open spots. I have a feeling that I am not alone in thinking this - and so many of these events may be seeing some increased registration in the next few weeks. I need to figure out what one I would like to do soon so I dont miss out on the opportunity in the event spots fill!

Upcoming events:
Grand Rapids (MI) – 10/28
Raleigh, NC - 11/4
Philadelphia – 11/18
Atlanta - 11/22
Memphis 12/1
West Palm Beach (FL) 12/1
Sacremento (CA) - 12/2
Las Vegas – 12/2
Tuscon 12/2
Jacksonville FL 12/16

Good Things
Can "good thing" actually have come out of this whole experience? Its hard to think of this in a positive light, I know - but I need to try.
  • More time to work on healing/improving my back problems
  • More time to train
  • Opportunity to travel to a new destination
  • The next Marathon I attempt should practically be easy compared to yesterday's experience. At least ... its impossible to have any worse of an experience!!!!

Finally, I want to thank my family and friends. Jeff and his family were there to cheer me on repeatedly during the course, and to console me after. My sister met me just as it felt my world was about to collapse - at mile 16. Her support and silent understanding helped me keep my cool, and I think is a large percentage of the reason I feel more optimism than anger or regret today. I also want to thank the family and friends of those I have been running with (specifically Patti's family & friends. Her sister was a guardian angel). You were there to offer us bottles of water and Gatorade. To offer us hugs. To offer us support.

While yesterday was one of the most challening experiences of my life - it would have been entirely different had these individuals not been there. They made everything seem ok, and made me optimistic that I can still do this. I WILL DO THIS.

I'm Ready?

Got my clothes ready. Set my alarm. Did some stretching. Put on my fancy pace tatoo. 9 hrs 15 minutes until the gun. Its all in the hands of fate now :)

Friend or Foe?

My sister brought me cupcakes - all the way from DC. I cant tell if it was a nice or mean gesture. I keep looking at them ... and crying. So I have the motivation to finish - a cupcake. But I also have something urging me to give up ... and just eat it now.

So is she being nice, offering a reward? Or is she out to get me, trying to get me to pig out on cupcakes the day before the Marathon? Hmmmm....

The Expo - And Getting Ready

Spent a bit of time at the expo today. Luckily it wasnt too crowded. I heard its just going to be nuts tomorrow. I think because we went early today (and on a Friday) that we avoided much of the hassle and crowds we could have encountered.

Team In Training had a booth...serving as a central gathering point for us (the TNT runners) but also to promote the cause and encourage future participation in upcoming events.

Its official! I have my number - now all I have to do is show up Sunday morning. (Oh yeah, and run 26.2 miles).

I Should Have Made Another List :(

Yesterday, during a discussion about how I need to keep it day-to-day, I made a list to help keep me level-headed as the Marathon approaches. The idea was to take each day one-at-a-time, and that the list would help me focus on the days objectives alone. I think I should have made a list this morning, instead of thinking about it now...because I have spent 1/2 of my day ingesting candy and cookies. I tried to make up for it by eating an orange ... but then followed it with more candy. And while I prepared my salad I ate some more candy. So, today is nearing its end - but I did get something accomplished - a massage!

The massuse worked a bit on my legs, but spent most of the time on my neck and back. I have so many knots - and these knots do two things. First, on a daily basis they limit my range of motion. Second, (and more important recently!) they seem to be the source of my lower back pain when I am running long distances. My hope is that if some of the knots I just got worked out ... will STAY AWAY. Adding a bit more luck on my side for Sunday. (And I need all the luck I can get)

Tomorrow's List
Since my list for today appears to be a failure, I am going to make my list for tomorrow. I only have a few hours left of today and I think I can made it through as long as I stay away from the candy and avoid getting too wrapped up into my tv shows.

1. STAY AWAY FROM SUGAR
2. Go to the Expo, dont wear myself out, avoid getting injured
3. Pick up my fan-club president from the airport
4. Go out for pasta dinner, save leftovers for my "last meal" on Saturday
5. Work out some logistics: what time will I get up? what time will I leave? where will I look for people during the Marathon? am I going to bring stuff for gear-check? how do I find people after the race? Maybe tomorrow I should do an hourly schedule type thing...do I need to get that literal?

My Fans Are Arriving

My fan-club president (and sister) arrives in town tomorrow. Her duties while in Chicago include calming, cheering, and recruiting. If she can recruit just one more member the fan club size will double :) She will be handing out flyers on Sunday ...

Find Me On Race Day!

Many people have been asking how to find me along the race route. As an ineperienced Marathoner, I can only give guesstimates. My goal is to run with a pace group in the beginning, which will pace at 11:27 per mile. I plan on feeling awesome about 1/2 way through, which at that point I will slightly pick up my pace. Obviously this is not a sure thing! Pacing at 11:27 has me finishing at 5 hours, and I really want to finish under 5. (Not a lot under 5, 4 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds is fine with me!!!!).

The Chicago Marathon start-time is 8:00 am. It takes a while for 45,000 people to cross the start line, so my actual start-time will not be 8:00 am. Other reports I have seen have ranged from an extra 10 to 30 minutes of waiting until an individuals race may actually begin. So I am assuming I will start at 8:15. Its unlikely I will start before that, and for those looking for me ... if I start late, but you are already there - then odds are good you will see me. If I say I will start at 8:30, and I actually start at 8:15, people who like to press the limits of time might actually miss me :)

Here is a general guideline of what time I will cross each mile-marker.
Mile # Time
START 8:15 AM
Mile 1 8:26:27 AM
Mile 2 8:37:54 AM
Mile 3 8:49:21 AM

Mile 11 10:20:57 AM
Mile 12 10:32:24 AM
Mile 13 10:43:51 AM
Mile 14 10:55:18 AM
Mile 15 11:06:45 AM

Track Me On Race Day!
There was a glitch in the system, but its fixed. Register to receive my time updates delivered to your mobile or email throughout the race! Rumor is that these updates can often be quited delayed, so don't count on them as a way to find me throughout the race. By the time you get the update, its likely I am well past that particular check-point.

Training Log
Time:  40:00 time  Distance:3.67 miles   Pace:  10:54 min/mi
Since I didnt to the 40 yesterday, I did it today (instead of the suggested 30 minutes at "marathon pace"). I also had my Pilates class today, but made sure to restrict some of the movements that involved my back. I was going to go for a run tomorrow, but my schedule is filling up quickly ... including a pre-race massage ... and I think I might officially just kick-into full rest gear. Thats still something I am pondering over :(

The Fidgets

I know a lot of runners get fidgity during a taper because they get all that pent-up energy and are just itching to run. I am not itching to run ... but am fidgity just because of the slightly psychotic thoughts running through my head. Luckily last night I didnt have tv-inspired thoughts of being a time-traveller or source of government secrets, and slept pretty well. So I thought I would wake up today feeling better but I still feel a bit crazy. I am tying hard to to think too much about SUNDAY - but everyone keeps putting it in my face :) Friends and family asking me about the plan for Sunday, emails from RunnersWorld with tips, emails from Team in Training mail-lists with people asking about singlet decorations and race strategies...its all Marathon all the time. I know this is to be expected, but occasionally I can be highly excitable so I like to ignore the obvious until the last minute so that I dont have a hissy-fit. It appears this is one of those times I will simply not be able to do so. Instead, I need to think of each day as it comes. So here goes todays strategy:

Un-Official 4 Days Pre-Marathon Strategy
  1. Cut down on the sugar (especially since I have been overdoing it lately). This starts with a regular latte in the morning ... instead of one with syrup! Baby steps...
  2. Teach my class. Try to keep kids awake for a whole 50 minutes.
  3. Go to Pilates. Try not to injure myself.
  4. Easy 40 minute run. Try not to injure myself.
  5. Go to Costco for dog food and dog treats. The food prevents the dog from starving: the treats prevent the dog from forcing me to play with her constantly, thus reducing situations in which I might injure myself.
  6. Print out confirmation ticket, put with my race-day clothes so I dont forget
  7. Stay away from tv that makes me delusional
Non Marathon-Related Stuff
If nothing else good comes out of this whole experience, I am pleased to say I appear to have spread a little motivation within the family. My mom has signed up for a 5K walk, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. In addition, she is fundraising!

My sister recently completed her first 8K - and has started blogging! She isn't blogging about running ... but its a start, right? :)

I Am A Bad Person

Despite the 40 minute run I am supposed to do ... I have officially decided to opt to do nothing instead. I promise to run tomorrow, for real.

You ever just get into a funk? For no reason, all of a sudden, your mood kind of turns and you become grumpy? I am sure a run would motivate me and pick up my mood ... but the problem is getting to run in the first place. Unfortunately, it is not going to happen.

Last night I didnt sleep at all. It was really wierd - and completely related to Monday night television! I kept having these thoughts that made me panicky and I couldnt fall asleep. When I try to remember them, I cant remember if they were about 1) me traveling in time or 2) me having government secrets trapped in my head or 3) a combination of both 1 & 2. I know it was one of these three choices because it was tv shows that I watched, somehow infultrating my psyche, that kept me up with crazy thoughts all night. In "Chuck", the character has government secrets planted in his head and is involved in all of these goofy save-the-world type experiences due to the knowledge he possesses. In "Journeyman", the main character travels in time to fix/repair situations. Unfortunately I have an over-active imagination and seemed to have taken these shows a bit more seriously. Note to self: No tv the night before the Marathon!

As I sit here eating peanuts (and having just finished a huge cookie) thinking about how I really need to go run, I can at least be happy that I do have something to weark come Sunday. I got letters added to my singlet at a t-shirt press store. There will be tons of us out in TNT shirts come Sunday ... but you might be able to find me if you look for my name. Here it is:

I Am Mad At The Cubs

The Cubs made the playoffs. Thats awesome. Problem is, the Cubs scheduled their games for Saturday, October 6th at 5pm and Sunday, October 7th at 12pm. On October 6th I have a Team in Training pasta party at 5:00pm and on October 7th I will still be running the Marathon at 12:00 pm. So my husband now cannot go (or has opted not to go!) to my team pasta party ... and everyone I know is going to be trying to ditch out on my Marathon finish so they can watch the Cubs :)

These games are the 3rd and 4th of a 5 game series...so hopefully the Cubs will sweep in three and dont have to compete with the Marathon at all. But I have a feeling that there will be a game 4 - and my very one Chicago Cubs are going to steal my thunder! What are the odds of the Cubs in the playoffs first of all. And what are the odds of me running a marathon? The odds are not likely for either event - but the odds of both taking place the same day? Its got to be like one in a billion :) So in order for me to get the full attention of my friends and family - I need the Cubs to SWEEP in three. GO CUBS!

Today was a truly hectic day - from scheduled meetings, to pilates and a run, to some of my favorite weekly tv shows that just so happen to all hit on the same night and (of course) simultaneously. Now that my brain is fully in meltdown after watching four hours of shows, I believe that I can finally head to sleep. That is, unless Jeff and I decide to watch the one show left we had to TiVo. In that case, I have about an hour left of my day! But, I did get some important things done today - most notably my race singlet is finished. I went in to get my name on it, and the girl did it as I waited. Since I can check off one thing on my list - I can now be happy with my productive day.

Training Log
Time:  40:00 time  Distance:3.66 miles   Pace:  10:56 min/mi
Today was a 40 minute run and I took it as easy as possible. I think I was lucky it was raining because it forced me to use the treadmill. And by using the treadmill I could force myself to run at a slower pace than I ususally do when I head out in the neighborhoods. So I set the pace to a smidge less than 11 minutes and set out for my 40 minute run. It was boring, but I managed. Only a few more runs left!

Flowers & Leaves

This is Wrigley's favorite time of the year. With so many exciting scents (and discarded fast food), walks that used to take 10 minutes now take 20. Luckily we are both of the same frame of mind - time to stop and smell the flowers!
