I ran the NYD 5K on the first day of this year to motivate me to get back into running. I signed up for the Shamrock Shuffle 8K (three months later) to motivate me to push myself a bit past a basic 3-miler to get back to doing a decent distance. I signed up for a post-natal ab recovery class to begin to get back some of the core strength I have lost, and I'm currently in week 7 of a 10-week class.
But what do I do now? I'm taking another class over the summer (Biceps, Babies & Buggies) focusing on core strength and overall fitness conditioning, but dont have another race my schedule.
This is where I get confused. There are TONS of 5K's in the city, one almost every weekend. 8K's are harder to find, and there are a few even longer distances. I really found the 8K to be easy and could have run further, but I had a hard time with the training. Its hard to find time in my schedule to run, and even harder to find time to do a longer run required for a longer race. But, the two primary longer races I can consider are:
Soldier Field 10 Mile
May 23
Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon
August 2
Right now I am a bit confused. I'm not sure how to plan out my summer, and how to fit in training for a possible race ... but I do think I need a goal out there to keep me motivated. I wouldnt have done what little running I did do if I didnt have the Shamrock Shuffle on my calendar :(

Can You Run In Galoshes?
I woke up expecting to see snow on the ground, but instead found that I could barely see out of my window. Whipping wind, huge wet snow, and visability about 10 feet. Sweet. I figured maybe people werent going to do the Shamrock Shuffle today, so I sent out a general text. Um, everyone was still in ... that meant I was too.
My friend Christina picked me up at 8:40 for a 9:45 start time. Seeing as it would only take us 20 minutes to get there we figured we were doing great. Unfortunately, every road was blocked when we got down to the start area, and we drove around for 45 minutes. At one point we had to wait to turn as we watched the elites and "A Corral" people running by us (they had a 9:30 start time). Whoops.
Eventually we parked and got to the start, only to have to wait until the walkers (who did a different 5K course) started. We verified we were still allowed to run the 8K course and with some directions we were off on our way.
For the first mile or so it was just us and a "warming bus". A school bus following the course to pick up any people who were too cold to continue. The cold wasnt the issue - the 2 or so inches of slush and water on the ground was. Our feet were soaked before we even started the race.
About 2 miles in we caught up to the walkers, and by 3 miles in we were back in the mix of it, with runners all around. Yay!
I took it really easy the whole time and never felt the urge to stop. In fact, befored I knew it we were approaching the finish line!
I honestly was suprised how easy this race was for me. I am sure my slow pace had a lot to do with it, but I also think all of the commotion leading up to the race and the conditions we had to run in made for a bit of an adventure.

Race Prep
Gearing up for the 8K tomorrow by doing a few important things.
1) Fueling Up
A latte and a pastry for breakfast, followed by,
Some pop, a pulled pork sandwich and some french fries for lunch.

2) Resting the Legs
With loads of laundry and a shopping trip.
3) Mental Preparation
Pulled the 20 page participant guide off the web so I know where to park my vehicle tomorrow. Checked the weather forecast and cried. At race time it will be 33 and snowing. Awesome.

4) The Little Things
Guess since I did all of the important stuff already, I should find a few minutes to do the little things like get my clothes together, put my chip on my shoe and bib on my shirt, and collect any other race-day necessities into one place :) I'll get to that stuff sometime tonight...

One MORE????
There are 2 reasons I love running by the lake. The first is an obvious one: the view!
The second best thing is the characters you encounter down by the lake. The boardwalk of Lake Michigan has several groups of people: serious athletes, weekend warriors, casual walkers/onlookers, tourists, local oddities and wierdos. Today it was 60 and sunny and some of the stranger individuals came out of the woodworks. I saw them all but coudnt snap a pic of all of them. Two that I missed included a (homeless?) man in a parka, with his hood on. Standing in the middle of the beach surrounded by shopping bags, staring up into the sun. The other was an older gentleman in nothing but a pair of running shorts (the short, barely there ones). This is not that strange on this path, but this man had a bicycle filled with garbage and nicknacks, including a hand-written poster that said "Free Hugs". He was very busy arranging rocks on the path and taking pictures of them.
Here are a few I did get
I guess sometimes you just gotta get all dolled up, throw on your mink, and take a walk in 60 degree weather down by the lake

This particular gentleman was alternating between napping, talking to a goose, and smoking something that did not smell like a cigarette

Dog and owner hanging out - under the dog's watchful eye

Then there was this cool bird - black & white and kindof fuzzy with a tuft on his head. I've never seen anything like it around this area
Training Log
Time:45:08   Distance:4+ mi   Pace:???
RunKeeper got me again. The issue is that you cannot go back and forth between applications ... and I did this both on accident and on purpose several times. Each time you move out of the application your run tracking stops. From what I can tell, the total time is correct, but it does not track your distance in between the pause and resume. Going on this assumption (that the time is right), I know I ran a bit over 4 miles. 4.25 seems too gracious, so I'm going to go with 4.10. That puts me at 11 minute miles. I dont know, maybe it's too fast ... I was purposely running slow and did go farther in distance then I generally do. So my pace was somewhere between 11 and 12:30, howz that?
While I completed today's run without keeling over, I do have to do it again ... plus one in just a few days. I'm hoping the 30,000 others are enough motivation to keep me going!

I Know Someone Famous
Today the folks from the Shamrock Shuffle sent out a newsletter:

There is more to the newsletter, but the first thing you see is my friend Bradley! I met Bradley training for the Chicago Marathon in 07, and more importantly we ran every single step of the Las Vegas Marathon together. Since Brooke came into the picture he has continued his running (while I obviously have not) including last years Shamrock Shuffle. He obviously was pretty impressive because he now appears to be the "face" of the Shuffle :) Yay Bradley! He also participated in a game on Ellen when she broadcast from Chicago, so he is no stranger to fame

Went to abs class this morning and survived. I did better than I thought I would and it felt good to have a successful return to the world outside of my home. I knew I needed to get a run in, but after a long period of resting I figured I should keep it to a minimum. Went out for a 2 miler and survived that too ... success!
If only I could figure out how to translate a 2 mile run into a 5 mile run :(

A New Game Plan
I'm starting to feel better. My cold symptoms are 90% gone, but I'm tired. Really tired. So now I need to figure out how to best get myself to the 8K on Sunday.I missed my ab class on Monday but plan to go tomorrow. I'm sure that it wont be easy, seeing as I havent moved around much in the past week or so. But its something. I also am planning a short run tomorrow (2-miler). That should be a good combo to get me back in action (abs + run). On Thursday I have a sitter during the day and intended on going down to the lake and doing 4.5. I'm pretty sure that would be a bit too much for me right now, but I'm still going to go down to the lake and make an attempt. I'll probably do a short run on Sat ... and then its d-day :)

Warning: A Lot Of Complaining Ahead
Its been a while. A week exactly! Its been a long week :)
My sister was in town and put a little damper on my running. No bit deal, I rethought my schedule and figured out with a small run in the middle of the week, a 4-miler on Sat or Sunday and a 4.5 miler somewhere in the middle of next week ... I'd still be ok.
Then I got sick :(
I had a scratchy throat for a few days that has now blossomed into a full-on-cold. I've had worse and certainly dont want to make it seem worse than it is, but its not something I can go out and run with. Not its been a while since I have run, and to top it off I am exhausted!
Unfortunately, thats not the end of my complaining.
Both of my knees have been hurting. Up and down stairs mostly, but my right knee also hurts in general all of the time. I get a pulling finger on the outside of my right knee on stairs, and also am having cramping or something in it as well. I remember after really long runs I would get the same thing, and couldnt keep my knee in a locked position for a long period of time. But I havent done any long runs. In addition, I am not even running right now and my knees hurt.
There is something else weird. My ankles are really creaky and sore when I get up in the morning. When I get out of bed its actually hard to walk. It takes a bit of time until they "warm up". I have a feeling this is how my arthritic dog feels.
So, I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself. I am hoping I feel amazing tomorrow so I can get a run in, but not too sure how this week is going to pan out. I have an 8K in just a week....

I Deserve It
Did my run in the freezing weather, finished a few loads if laundry ... Then off to reward myself with a little TLC.
Runkeeper is royally confused
I did 2 miles today as suggested by Hal Higdon. This was a good thing because my legs, back and mind are just exhausted! Anyway, the 2-miler was good, despite the frigid air. But a little suprise happened when I checked out RunKeeper at the end of my run.
According to RunKeeper I ran 9.62 miles in 21:05 minutes, at a pace of 2:12 per mile. In addition, according the the map I evidently can run on water.
Training Log
Time:21:05   Distance:2.02 mi   Pace:10:26
I mapped out my run beforehand, so I know it was about 2.02 miles. In addition, I think that the time of the run was correct, its just the distance (and map) that dont make any sense! I like the idea that I run 2 minute miles a lot more than 10:30's.

Shopping...For A Good Cause
When I trained for the Chicago Marathon I did it through Team In Training, an organization that benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I was a charity runner, and all of the money I raised went to the society. Now there is another opportunity to help through the Gap Inc.'s Give & Get promotion. You get 30% off Gap Inc Stores and on top of that 5% of the amount you spend goes to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! What's better than saving money and at the same time helping a charity???
What To Do
1) Visit the link to print out a coupon
2) Shop at Gap, Banana Republic or Old Navy between 3/12 and 3/15
3) Save 30% while also donating 5% to LLS
Easy, right? Now book some time in your calendar to do some shopping :)

Today I did a double-doozie ... ab class and a 3 mile run. I had no choice if I wanted to get all my runs in this week, but its really hard to do both in one day! My ab class does do some leg stuff (lifts, planks, etc) and also just the 50 minutes of continual work can really wear me out. So I started out my run feeling pretty tired, was tired during the run, and am really tired now :) It feels good to get it in, and I had a Coke to celebrate. Yay!

Week 6
Its Hal Higdon's 6th week of my 8-week training and the most I have run is 3 miles. Whoops.
Monday: stretching & strengthening
Tuesday: 3 miles
Wednesday: 40 minutes cross training
Thursday: 2 miles and stretching & strengthening
Friday: rest
Saturday: 50 minutes cross training
Sunday: 4 miles
Thank goodness for my ab class. Not only is there strengthening involved, but we work at a rapid and continual pace (I'd consider it cross training too). I'm not sure I can do 4 by Sunday, but I bet I can do 3.5. Thats not too far off the schedule despite the setbacks I have had.
Speaking of setbacks, I'm having some knee issues. I had knee issues during training last time, but this is different. They both hurt, they are cracking & popping, and particularly hurt when I go up stairs or down in a squat. I have a feeling that it might be from the pounding of foot to pavement and that perhaps I need new shoes. I bought my current shoes in October of 2007. That sounds like a really old pair of shoes, but I used them for the marathon in Dec 07 and didnt run much again after that. Still, despite the fact they dont have a lot of miles on them, I still think they might be the culprits. Unless my body is just that beat down and running has become that much more challenging for me :(

Might Be In A Bit of Trouble
I need to get in a run today to make my mileage for this week, especially since I am no where near the distances I should be running for this training plan. Of course, we have had nasty weather all weekend. Yesterday I got lucky and squeezed in my run during a break in the weather. Today I dont know if I will be as lucky.
We had thunderstorms all night and its still raining (at 9:30 AM). Our regional weather loop is not showing a promising run today!

A Morning Run
Brooke woke up nice and early this morning (as usual), and together the early wake-up call and the threats of severe storms all weekend pushed me to get out and do my run. It actually felt great to do it first thing (well, first thing after all of her needs were attended to). I havent been out for an early run in forever, and definitely prefer it over having to wait until late at night after she is in bed.
Training Log

Again I had some trouble with RunKeeper. The ap doesnt work when the iPhone is set to seek out wi-fi (it interferes with the GPS or something) and I keep forgetting to turn it off. I forgot again, so the attempts to connect with local wi-fi's screwed up both the time and distance of my run. So I guestimated the time and took the distance from Favorite Run.
I honestly felt pretty great the whole run, and would like to thank Britney, Kanye, and Justin for providing the soundtrack to my excursion. Special tribute to Jessie who's Leavin came on right about mile 1 and put a little spring in my step and smile on my face.

Unseasonably Warm
It's 63 degrees, and the dog is restless. I took her out in the back to throw the ball a bit ... threw it three times until she realized how warm it was and decided to hide in the bit of shade she could find :)
At least one of us did some running today! I got as far as mapping out my 3-mile run, but thats it. I guess thats better than only thinking about mapping it out, right? I did do my ab workout today, so 1 of 2 homework assigments is completed. All I have to do is run tomorrow and Sunday and my week is complete ...
Update:
I just learned two things from the 10:00 news.
1) Today hit 65, our normal high is 42
2) We are supposed to get rain ALL weekend. Not sprinkles, "flash floods". So glad I postponed my runs to the point where I need to run both this weekend.

Running Is Hard
I had my abs class today. It was challenging. Each week we up the level of difficulty, reps, etc. This week (week 3) has been a struggle for me. While I can already see improvements, I can also see a lot of weaknesses :)
I had to get out for a run today - my timing has been difficult this week, but today I had the free time. I have been very stressed and very tired, and really wasnt in the mood for a run, but sucked it up and went anyway.
Training Log
Time:27:53   Distance:2.55 mi   Pace:10:57
I did another 2.5 today, still not mentally ready for the 3. Thank goodness I didnt decide to up it because I never would have made it. I was tired! Its a combination of getting up at 4 (thanks Brooke!), my hectic schedule this week, and the fact that I did 50 minutes of abs earlier in the morning. The whole run I felt very lethargic. I got held up at a stoplight for a long time (I'd say about 1 1/2 minutes) and really thought about just walking home from there. Though I was tired I kept going, because todays run actually mentally felt pretty good. I needed to get out of the house, get some fresh air, and forget about all of the other stuff going on. And it worked. For 30 minutes I didn't have to sweat the small stuff, just had to worry about making it through a couple of miles. I generally dont get that sort of release from a run so today was exceptionally special ;)

Back In Action
I am back! I have the internet! My life is now complete.
Yesterday was Day 1 of Hal Higdon's 5th week of my 8-week training!
Monday: stretching & strengthening
Tuesday: 2.5 miles
Wednesday: 40 minutes cross training
Thursday: 2 miles and stretching & strengthening
Friday: rest
Saturday: 50 minutes cross training
Sunday: 4 miles
Du to some bumps in the road I have yet to break 2.5 miles and have been messing around with the schedule a bit. There is no way I am doing 4 miles this weekend :( I am definitely planning on getting 3 in this week, and perhaps if I feel awesome bumb to 3.5. I'm going to play it by ear and see how it goes - it looks like the running gods are a bit in my favor this week as we have a warmup on Thursday and Friday that will take us into the 50's. Thats practically a heat wave here in Chi-town!

Busted Internet
My Internet is down! I have my iPhone, which ocasionally decides to
connect ... But essentially I am cut off from the world. I don't even
know what my training schedule for this week looks like :(

Last weeks mileage total was 7. I did another 2.5 on Sat that was
MUCH smoother than the first. I should run today, but it's really
cold and I'm tired from my abs class today. I'll think about it ...
