Small update

Baby Schneider appears to have lost interest in hanging out and is
scheduled for an early arrival. Jeff & I have been at the hospital for
4 hours now and are playing the waiting game :). I'll post info when I
can!

I'm Majoring in Marathoning

Runners World digs up some interesting stuff every once-in-a-while. For example, they recently had an article about Marathon College Courses. Classes you can take in college that are marathon-related ... in which you actually receive course credit!

This sounds like a great idea now, but when I was in college there is no way I was going to run for class. . (Though, I did take ice-skating in undergrad and got an A) I highly doubt a PE class like the ones described could have been applied towards my MBA or PhD, but maybe it should. Students of any age can often get overwhelmed with life - the combination of school, family, friends, etc. Exercise is often shown to help with more than just fitness ... it also can alleviate stress. Perhaps a course like one of these might have been ideal when I was ready to crack (those many times) in my post-collegiate career :)

Runner's World lists 8 universities that offer credit for Marathon courses of some kind. One of them is actually where I got my MBA, too bad I didnt know about it then. But again, it took me quite a few years of life until I had the marathon bug ... and it wasnt happening while I was getting my MBA :) Perhaps if the course was available to me though, I would have done it way back when. Who knows how different my life would be if I had run my 1st marathon in 2002 versus 2007? Hmmm.....

Put Those Kids To Work!

Always interesting things out there on the internets...

Gymkids is taking advantage of the childhood obesity problem by peddling exercise equipment for toddlers and kids. For ages 3-5 they have an exercise bike, an "airwalker" (similar to the concept of an elliptical) and a treadmill.

Maybe instead of buying exercise equipment for little kids, parents could try turning off the TV, avoiding the McDonalds drivethrough and taking junior to the park for some actual playtime? A 3-year-old isnt unhealthy or overweight because he/she is lazy and needs to be put on the treadmill ... and they certainly dont need to start training for their future marathons at this age either :(

Just Because

A litte bit of Friday Funnies at my own expense...

Ok, while surfing I came across this fantastic tool on InStyle.com where you can Try On Celebrity Hairstyles. You can choose a face that looks like yours and then pick some hairstyles, or you can actually upload a photo of yourself.

I wanted to know if I had any future in politics, so I tried on the hairstyles of some of the current women in the political media :)

Here I am with the hair of Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama

And Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton

Of course, there is no point to trying on hair without giving "The Anniston" a whirl.

The Arrival of Fall

As Summer has ended and Fall has found itself on our doorstep, I have been thinking about what this transition truly means. I have always loved fall: I love the colors, the weather, and the fashion. But there is more to it than that - and I think it means something different to everyone.

Why This Fall Is So Awesome
  1. Back to School
Normally I go back to school in the fall, but this year I am taking a year of maternity leave. Not only do I get to take a break, but I am one step closer to my life mission (to be a student for life). While I am not an active student this year, I am definitely still a student ... and no closer to finishing any time soon. No School = Happy Lifestudent
  2. Pumpkin Spice & Gingerbread Lattes
I love the fall offerings at Starbucks ... and even when I am not in the mood for a coffee I like to just go into the store and smell the wonderful aroma.
  3. TELEVISION: New & Old
We get the return of favorites, and some new additions! So far I am watching new shows like 90210, The Mentalist and Fringe. I also am happy to see the return of The Office, Grey's Anatomy, Chuck and many others.

  4. The Cubs!
The Cubs are still playing in October ... Im not going to say anything else cuz I dont want to jinx it.
  5. Baby Schneider
We go from 2 to 3 in just a short time with the expected arrival of Baby Schneider. That makes this Fall (and the rest of our days) quite different from any others.
Of course, there are some negatives to this Fall. First, I am not running in (or most likely even spectating) the Chicago Marathon. Second, though I generally love Fall clothes, I do not love my current Fall body. While layering is beneficial to hide the baby weight, shopping for all of the cute Fall stuff is not going to be the highlight of my season this year. And finally, with the purchase of our new house we also got two beautiful (and quite old) trees. While this may sound like a positive thing, when the leaves start falling (and falling, and falling) I believe that its possible we might get a little miffed at those trees :)

Putting Those Old Kicks To Good Use

Runners generally find themselves buying lots of pairs of shoes - the more miles you put on em, the sooner (and more often) you need a new pair. Eventually those shoes can stack up if you arent finding a good way to get rid of the old ones when you bring home your shiny new ones.

As I try to clean up some of the old stuff around my house, I found about 5 pairs of old running shoes. And as I havent been running ... not a single pair of them has gotten any love in months.

At the beginning of the summer I mentioned that Nike has a program to recycle shoes, but I just got a list of a ton of other sources from Runners World that I thought I would share!

Soles4Souls
Shoe companies, retailers, and individuals can donate footwear both new and used to those in need around the world. Soles4Souls has coordinated relief efforts for the Asian Tsunami and Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ike, netting over 1 Million pairs donated for these disasters.

Hope Runs
Hope Runs is a non-profit group working in Kenya and Tanzania, using athletics, education, and social entrepreneurship to empower AIDS orphans. They accept donations, including running shoes.

Shoe4Africa
Shoe4Africa is a charitable organization whose mission is "empowerment through sports and education, creating unique health initiatives, and promoting Aids awareness."

Nike Reuse-A-Shoe
Grinds your old running shoes into material that makes athletics and playground surfaces.

One World Running
Since 1986, a group of runners in Boulder, Colorado, has collected, washed and sent to Third World countries new and "near-new" athletic shoes along with other athletic equipment.

The Shoe Bank
Founded in 1989, the Shoe Bank provides shoes for twenty thousand people every year - primarily children, both here and abroad.

Heart and Sole
Provides new and gently used shoes to the poorest of the world's people. Since the project began in 1999, more than 6,000 pairs of shoes have been shipped around the world.

Warren Striders Track Club, Inc.
Provides running shoes to local and area low/moderate income families who often are unable to purchase adequate running shoes to their children.

Sole Responsibility
A non-profit organization formed by a group of runners in Ottawa, Canada who donate gently used running and walking shoes overseas.

Get Your Body Back

Its funny, as my due date approaches I get one of two comments from people:
1)I bet you cant wait to hold that baby
2)I bet you cant wait to get your body back
People are always of one mindset or the other - they think about the joys of having a baby, or the joys of ending the pregnancy. Personally, I have a tough time thinking about either. Its impossible to image (especially as a first-time-mom) holding a baby that is "mine" and all of the stuff that follows once Jeff and I are actually parents. But, its also impossible for me to imagine my body ... the one I am in right now sure doesnt feel like mine, and I dont really know when it will again!

A few weeks ago a friend of mine told me she is doing a 1/2 Marathon in Miami in January ... and since I will have had the baby by then did I want to do it with her. Sure, it sounds fun...but I am not even sure when (or IF) I will start running again, let alone be up to the ability of running 13 miles 3 months after the baby. Then my sister asked today "How long does it take to get your body back?". I told her that I had heard it takes about 6 months, and I could her her jaw hit the floor all the way from D.C.

Im no Heidi Klum, who hit the Victoria Secret runway 8 weeks after having a baby looking like this. In fact, all the dieting, plastic surgery, fancy lighting and photo-retouching in the world couldnt make me look anything like this.

Lots of people think its just about losing the weight - but the structure of a woman's body changes during pregnancy as well. Ab muscles are stretched farther than most believe is humanly possible, and the vertical muscles of the abdominal wall often separate. The pelvis is often wider, making you susceptible to hip, knee and ankle injuries.

The trick is, generally you cannot begin any strenuous exercise for 6 weeks...and research says if you dont lose all of your baby weight within 6 months you are more likely to be overweight a full decade later. That means you have about 4.5 months to "get your body back" (while also taking care of a new baby) or else you might never see that old body again. Sure does add on some pressure, huh?

And while it may take 6 months to see that old body again, it can take a full year to feel normal again. Elizabeth Trindade president of Strollercize (a pre- and postnatal exercise program in New York) is quoted in a Fit Pregnancy article:
The only thing that returns to normal at six weeks postpartum is the ability to start working out. You might squeeze back into your pants at six or seven months if you take working out and dieting to the extreme, but that’s not good for you or your family. Work out regularly, don’t panic and you’ll get your body back in a year.
A year huh? Great...just in time for the 2009 Chicago Marathon.

Bears Sunday

It's a nice Sunday afternoon ... Thought we would offer some support
to the Chicago Bears (since the Cubs already clinched and obviously
don't need us as much!)

Olympic Trouble Still Brewing

5 athletes have already been disqualified from the Beijing Olympics, and the IOC is still considering pending doping cases. Looks like two men from the hammer throw (what the heck is a hammer throw, by the way?) might be disqualified. In addition, there are "several people" from "several nations" that are still being investigated.

Ok, so lets get rid of all the dopers (seems to me all athletes should be tested, not just a random sample). But how come there still hasnt been any word on the IOC's investigation into the possible age-fraud of the Chinese gymnasts? Thats what I am wating to hear about!!!

Compression Gear = Miracle Cure?

As the seasons begin to change (at least for some of us!), it becomes time to start looking for some new gear. When my training unexpectedly went into November & December last year, I needed to buy a ton more stuff to get me through the cooler temps. So on top of having to continue training, I also had to fork out gear for long-sleave shirts, gloves, pants and head wear (not to mention a new pair of shoes!).

The October issue of Women's Health has a big write-up on compression garments, including some product recommendations. Not only do these things keep you warm as the temps drop, but they appear to have some added benefits as well!

More Energy
According to the mag, a 2006 study found that during 15 minutes of running at 80 percent of their maximum effort, participants wearing compression tights used 26 percent less energy. Apparently, the tights restrict muscle movement which leads to less fatigue.

Less Injuries
Another study found that athletes wearing compression gear warmed up their muscles and skin temps faster than those in traditional gear. Warm muscles are both stronger and less prone to injuries than cooler ones.
The article suggests that compression shirts, that squeeze and support the lower back, can actually "ease back grief".

Faster Recovery
A 2006 study of runners who wore compression socks (compared to those that didn't) found that blood circulated to muscles more quickly. Faster circulating blood brings oxygen to the muscles at a more rapid rate. The article suggests putting on compression socks after a run to "streamline the blood flow in your calves, ankles, and dogs for faster, less painful recovery".

For product recommendations, check out the full article!

Running, For Runners, By Runners

Linden, over at Linden's Pensive, is just weeks out from the Berlin Marathon. She had a great idea to help hear leading up to the event ... ask other runners to share their race experiences and offer up some tips. The blogging community in general is pretty amazing, as people from all over the world (who do not know each other outside of the blogosphere) join together to form a virtual community. The running blogging community is no different - and Linden found some great Marathon Inspiration from her fellow runners.

I am sharing this post for two reasons:
1) Its always great to hear the stories of other runners
2) I am one of those that contributed (gotta self promote)

Anyway, its a great post for anyone who is a runner - and even if you arent a runner she has collected the wisdom of some interesting (and often quirky) bloggers. Its a good read!

Maybe A Way To Get Your 3-4 Hours In?

If you need to get 3-4 hours of moderate exercise, perhaps you dont have to quit your job...just get one of these.

It's a Treadmill Desk, and according to studies you can burn 100 extra calories per hour versus just sitting at your desk. If you work an 8-hour day, that could add up to 800 calories!

Interested? Just pony over $6,000 to Steelcase and you too can be the proud owner of this wonderful product ;)

All My Dreams Could Come True

Celebrity gossip columnist Perez Hilton is suggesting that there is talk of an NSYNC reunion. I have been talking about the New Kids On The Block, who have gotten back together and then so rudely planned their Chicago concert for 4 days before my due date :(

Well, the only thing better than a NKOTB reunion is an NSYNC reunion!

Now, if we could only get Justin & Britney back together...

Prerace Nutrition Mistakes

Sometimes a list of "dont's" helps more than a list of "do's". We are always told by others how/when/where we should do something, but with all of the endless advice its sometimes hard to get it all straight ... especially when some of it conflicts.

Training for a race is no different - and everyone has their tips they want to share. Runner's World might have the right way to give some tips by telling us about prerace nutrition mistakes versus giving us more tips to add to our endless lists. Their 5 big mistakes?
  1. Eating A Box of Pasta
  2. Drinking Gallons of H20
  3. Loading Up on Fiber
  4. Skipping Breakfast
  5. Trying Something New
Now when they say "box of pasta" and "gallons of H20" they dont mean this literally - but runners know exactly what they are talking about. Check out the article for more detail why each one of these are mistakes. They also cant resist giving you some of those wonderful tips to go along with each one of these mistakes, but I think that the context they put it all in makes sense :)

With Chicago having a few big races right around the corner (Banco Popular 1/2 and Chicago Marathon) I thought it might be a good time to post some real running-related info!

Got The "Fat Gene"? Better Quit Your Job!

Turns out that in order to fight a common fat gene all you need is some moderate exercise! Whats the hitch? Well, scientists say you need 3-4 hours a day. Most of us find challenges in getting to the gym for a speedy 60 minute workout, if 3-4 hours is whats needed people are going to have to decide between their health and their careers. Yes, you could suggest cutting out sleep, but studies clearly indicate the importance of sleep. Thus, cutting back on sleep would negatively impact your health. The only thing left in the day is work!

The article suggests that "every bit helps" and mentions things like going for evening walks and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. How many hours can you spend on the stairs each day? And how long of a walk can one truly take each evening?

It appears to me that scientists are basically suggesting one thing: if you carry this "fat gene" your just plain-old-screwed.

Friday Funnies

Pregnancy Fitness
Sarah Jo gave me a few "pregnancy tips". Not all of them are fitness related, but some are, and thus these appropriate for the blog this week :)

First, hydration is not just important to runners...its important to pregnant ladies too! And since I am doing yoga (and thats about it)...there are some differences between what I'm doing in yoga versus what a runner might do in yoga. For example:
Random Funny
Ok, nothing to do with running, or fitness, or anything really. Just plain-old-funny.

It appears that a 78-year-old woman in the Stockholm airport misunderstood the baggage process just a wee bit. Instead of placing her bags on the belt, she placed herself, at which point she was sent down the baggage chute.
In case you were worried, she suffered no major injuries and still made her flight!

Silent Auction for CAROL VANCE DECKER

I was surfing around on some of my baby-related blogs and found this post on Mamanista. The story really touched me and I thought I should post it on my blog(s) to try to spread the word.
Carol Decker had an emergency cesarean section on June 10, 2008. After the surgery she developed life-threatening hypotension from a septic pneumonia infection. After fighting for several weeks, the medicine she was on to save her life had the unfortunate side effect of blocking blood flow to her legs, left arm and eyes.

Since then, Carol has had both legs below the knee amputated, her left arm amputated and she is blind. Carol was transferred to Harborview after an extended stay in ICU at Swedish Hospital, which insurance has covered to an extent and the rest her family have had to pay for out of pocket. Carol will now begin inpatient rehab, which her insurance will not cover, and is estimated to cost somewhere around $80,000.
Items have been donated and you can bid for them at http://auctionforcarol.blogspot.com/. On that site there is also more info on Carol and her family - including pictures of her adorable children. You can also visit Scott & Carol Decker's blog, which has more info on the family and is following her progress.

You don't have to bid on items - but if you read this post I would love if you passed the info on to friends and family who you think might!

A Case of Mistaken Identity

Runners get all sorts of fun injuries, and a lot of them are pretty common. What I hear the most is "I have shin splints" or "I have runners knee", but most of the time these people are self-diagnosing. Why not self diagnose? Seems like everyone gets shin splints or runners knee somewhere along the path to 26.2. Runners World points out why we should think again before assuming we know what the source of our pain is as much of the time its actually harder to pinpoint than we think!

This article hits it right on the head for me! I was suffering from some knee pain during training last year and did some surfing on the internet. I originally self-diagnosed as runners knee. According to the Runners World article, what we often assume is Runners Knee is sometimes Iliotibial Band Syndrome. Turns out I had neither: after a visit with a trainer I was diagnosed with popliteal tendonitis!

Basically, the lesson in the story is that if you are having some pains you might want to go get them checked out. Rehab for injuries often differs based on what the actual source of the pain is ... and if we go about self-diagnosing we just might be trying to rehab something that doesnt need it all the while ignoring something that is truly in need of some TLC :)

This Better Be Worth It

I am a huge sucker and have decided that I should stay up until
midnight to catch the 2hr premier of the new 90210. After a long Cubs
game the Chicagoland area is lucky enough to get to see this show
about 5 hours later than the rest of the world. So everyone else
already knows if it stinks or not ... But here I sit without a clue,
missing precious sleep minutes.

Note to Self: Dont Go Running in Melbourne

Turns out, kangaroos are more than cute ... they also like to attack joggers every once-in-a-while.

Apparently a 50-year-old man going for a jog in Melbourne was attacked when he ran between a male and female kangaroo, suffering a head wound and some chest scratches. Thats what you get for coming between a pair of kangaroos! Guess he should have known better?
